Job Description

Mansfield College is seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic Wine Cellar and Deputy Bar Manager to reinvigorate and bring sparkle to the College Crypt Bar. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing a professional bar service, skilfully overseeing its operations so that it becomes not only profitable, but a place of inclusivity and welcome at the heart of the College. The post holder will not only manage the Crypt Bar, but also organise temporary ‘pop-up’ bars for student and conference events.

Reporting to the Front of House Manager and trained by the Bar Manager, the deputy Bar Manager will work closely with the Front of House Team. The Deputy Bar Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the bar, offering a hospitable and friendly service to all its customers and being the person who takes charge of the bar administration, finances and opening and closing the bar, as necessary.

The post holder will also manage the wine cellar, making timely stock orders and liaising with the SCR Wine Fellow to ensure satisfactory wine provision for special dinners.

We are looking for someone who is able to bring their creativity and industry expertise to this role, offering a vision of how our College Crypt Bar can be developed, improved and become a place of welcome and hospitality.

This post includes evening and weekend work.

Qualifications

  • Proven supervisory experience in a bar or restaurant setting
  • Strong team management and leadership skills
  • Extensive knowledge of food safety and culinary practices
  • Experience in bartending and food preparation
  • Background in hospitality and customer service
  • Familiarity with food production and kitchen operations
  • Previous experience in hotel or barista roles is a plus

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: £12.96 per hour

Expected hours: 20 per week

Job Title: Bars Manager – THE CUBE at Canary Wharf, London

Location: Canary Wharf, other sites for training and working if required

Responsible to: General Manager – THE CUBE at Canary Wharf

Responsible for: Bars Supervisors, Bars Team Leaders and bars operational staff.

Main Purpose/Function of Job: Bars Manager of a premium competitive socialising and entertainment attraction located in the heart of Canary Wharf’s busy business district.

Operating 7 days per week, you will be required to work regular evenings and weekends.

Main Duties:

  • Ensuring high performing operational management and financial efficiency of the 6 venue bars, and high levels of customer satisfaction.
  • Ensuring efficient customer throughput, maintenance of customer service, experiential and bar quality standards.

Operational Responsibilities

  • Having responsibility for day-to-day operations of the bars including line management of the Bars Supervisor, Bars Team Leader in addition to other staff.

Budget responsibilities

  • Efficiently implementing and reporting on bar operational budgets.

Responsibilities for Human Resource management and development

  • Assist with the recruitment and training of new employees maintaining a full staff cohort of 20+.
  • Aiming for resolution of any staff complaints or grievances within the chain of command, while providing a clear route for escalation to the General Manager if required.

Responsibility for IT Infrastructure, Booking Systems, Ticketing and POS Systems

  • Supporting the smooth operation of all IT infrastructure and EPOS systems.

Responsibility for Corporate & Group Bookings

  • Ensuring the planning and smooth delivery of bar service for group bookings in line with the client’s pre-order and event requirements, and operational procedures.

Responsibilities for Marketing & Communications

  • Liaise with the General Manager regarding suggestions and ideas to improve the marketing of the bars.

Responsibility for Safety and Compliance

  • Ensuring staff follow all health and safety regulations, HACCP and bar rules.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

  • Experience in a Bar management position.
  • Experience working in a leisure, visitor attraction, entertainment or hospitality setting.
  • Excellent understanding of cocktail service and menu development.
  • Experience of working to and achieving clear KPIs.
  • Exceptional customer service standards
  • Good understanding of Health & Safety management and statutory compliance obligations.
  • General understanding of basic HR procedures.
  • Good understanding of Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to inspire and effectively manage a large and diverse team.
  • Flexible approach to working including regular late night and weekend shifts.

Desirable Criteria

  • Previous experience as a DPS.
  • Experience of working in a busy competitive socialising venue.
  • Experience of managing multi-faceted food and beverage operations.
  • Experience of developing food and beverage menus that achieve optimal gross profit margins.
  • Experience of managing medium to large sized events.
  • Possess an IOSH or similar Health & Safety qualification.
