The project:

Working on refurbishment of passenger areas, works to improve security compliance processes within terminals, MEP refurbishment and projects to extend the serviceability lifespan of existing buildings.

We are hiring an ambitious and forward-thinking assistant design manager to join our established and growing team at Heathrow.

You’ll be responsible for:

  • Assisting the design team through the scheme/production design stage and the delivery team through into implementation and handover.

  • Representing the project team at client review meetings.

  • Developing a detailed design programme with all relevant parties to satisfy design, procurement and construction requirements.

  • Reviewing and commenting on the design for completeness, buildability, potential quality issues, potential lead time problems, scope packaging and other similar issues in conjunction with the Mace project team.

  • Attending co-ordination meetings with sub-contractors during design development.

  • Attending regular internal design meetings at which all new drawings, design team and sub-contractors, are reviewed and marked up with members of the Mace project team.

  • Actioning comments generated at internal design meetings including list of instructions for sub-contractors.

  • Assisting the construction managers in all design issues as and when required.

  • Managing the RFI and NCR process.

  • Closing out all design manager gateways in line with HALs process.

  • Ensuring design is compliant with statutory requirements and applicable standards.

Supervises daily activities of business design management plan and its effectiveness in meeting business, statutory, legal, and contractual requirements on project/s.

You’ll be responsible for:

  • Delivering elements of annual business plan and outcomes to timeframes and budget.
  • Developing working relationships with (range of) internal stakeholders.
  • Presenting design review data/key performance Indicators (KPIs) to project and sub-function leadership.
  • Working with team members providing operational delivery of team/regional strategy.
  • Supporting business development and work winning activities
  • Ensuring management system is followed and adhered, and completeness of project roles and responsibilities are met across project portfolios.
  • Managing a small team of direct reports, coordinating work activities to achieve agreed objectives and providing performance management, development and coaching.
  • Assisting and contributing in activities reported in management reviews, collating, analysing, and presenting data and key metrics.
  • Working collaboratively towards the common goal of net zero carbon transition, and share responsibility for the proactive identification and management of the associated carbon emissions and reductions during the delivery of work.

You’ll need to have:

  • Working knowledge & application of design management systems, design risk management and mitigation.
  • Basic knowledge of prefabrication/ build strategies.
  • Basic reporting skills.
  • Working knowledge of the construction and consultancy industries. Working knowledge of building safety legislation, building standards, construction contracts, professional appointments and health & safety legislation.
  • Good communication, organizational, presentation skills with excellent writing ability. Strong BIM literacy and IT skills.
  • Ability to work flexibly.
  • Ability to use initiative and make appropriate decision.
  • Enthusiastic.
  • Ability to adapt to change.
  • Listens and clarifies to check understanding.
  • Educated to degree level preferably in design relevant discipline (or equivalent).

You’ll also have:

  • Demonstrable basic level of building safety competence.
  • Continual professional development (CPD) record of continual learning/development.
  • Multi-sector experience delivering different building types.
  • Understanding of statutory and mandatory requirements and timescales.
  • Good knowledge of building standards and legislation.
  • Basic knowledge of health and safety executive (HSE) rules.
  • Good analytical skills.
  • Prepared to challenge and question.
  • Maintains impartiality & takes pragmatic approach evaluating evidence.
  • Membership professional body (RIBA, MICE, CIBSE, CIOB, RICS, CIAT (or equivalent).
