About the role

We have vacancies within our Property Services Operation Teams in responsive repairs, delivering an excellent repairs and maintenance service that promotes a culture of customer first and continuous improvement, and in our Electrical Compliance Team who are delivering cyclical electrical testing and smoke alarm replacements in our domestic homes. This is part of our on-going commitment to keep our customers, colleagues and stakeholders safe. However, you would be expected to work across all of property services as required.


About you

The successful applicants will be required to undertake all aspects of electrical work and be preferably experienced in all installation and maintenance work in domestic and non-domestic premises, including Mains Distribution, 3 phase and Electrical Inspection and Testing.

You should have completed a recognised trade apprenticeship or have equivalent relevant experience and possess all the skills necessary to deliver all aspects of electrical works to a high standard in occupied and void, domestic and non-domestic, premises ranging from minor repairs to the installation of major components.

You should hold relevant qualifications (refer to person specification) and also have experience of the trade.

Customer service skills are essential for this role as is an excellent knowledge of health and safety.

A full UK driving licence is essential.

The Role

We seek an outstanding individual to carry out electrical works on a wide range of installations both current and historical, producing high quality finish at all times.

The College Electrician will be responsible for the effective delivery of the College maintenance function, working as part of a team and on their own initiative to carry out duties and responsibilities as determined by the Clerk of Works and Head of Facilities in compliance with College policies and current health and safety practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • To undertake routine electrical and general maintenance of College buildings ensuring they’re safe and compliant.
  • To ensure that all work is carried out in accordance with Health and Safety legislation/environment standards, and current IEE regulations.
  • To assemble, install, test, and maintain electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus, and fixtures, using hand tools, power tools and testing equipment.
  • To inspect electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects/ faults, and the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with codes.
  • To manage the College’s programme of EICRs and ensure that any identified observations are actioned appropriately.
  • To maintain personal tools and equipment ensuring they are securely stored and properly maintained and assist with the maintenance of the inventory of tools and equipment including calibration of test equipment where required.
  • To carry out electrical works/projects and maintain accurate record of work undertaken.
  • To report all unsafe items of plant and equipment to the Clerk of Works.
  • To prioritise work to be done and to work with only partial supervision.
  • To assist other Maintenance Department tradesmen as required and where necessary report any problems requiring attention.
  • To undertake training as required to perform duties within the role, including health and safety courses.
  • To undertake ad hoc PAT Testing and fixed wire testing (EIC/minor works certificates).
  • To be prepared to assist in night-time and weekend call-out procedures.
  • To undertake and assist in any other tasks as instructed by the Clerk of Works and Head of Facilities.

The Person

We are looking for an experienced individual with the ability to cope with a varied and demanding workload.

Ideal candidates will demonstrate:

Knowledge & experience

  • City & Guilds NVQ 2/3 qualified.
  • Relevant qualification to level 5 or equivalent (desirable).
  • Holding a clean driving license.
  • Experienced, qualified and working to eighteenth edition standards for maintenance, installation, testing and certification.
  • C&G Electrical Inspection and Testing (2391) qualified, or equivalent (desirable)
  • Viewed as a Skilled-Person as outlined in BS: 7671 IET Wiring Regulations (2018).
  • Significant, recent and demonstrable experience in electrical maintenance work.
  • Experience of working in a College, higher education or historic building environment would be advantageous.

Personal skills & abilities

  • Good level of physical fitness. Due to the age and layout of the College, there are a number of steep staircases and areas of restricted access. The position will require lifting and moving of equipment and can involve working at heights. The position will be based both indoors and outdoors and require a high percentage of physical work.

  • Willingness to assist other trades within the team to achieve targets.
  • A good sense of humour and a friendly nature.

Remuneration

The post is offered at a salary of circa £35,000 per annum dependant on experience and ability. The post holder will join the College’s auto-enrolment pension scheme with generous additional contribution options on completion of probationary period.

Hours of Work

The post is full time, 37.5 hours per week, 8am – 4pm, Monday-Friday. The post will be based at King’s College.

To be successful in the role, the right candidate must satisfy the following requirements:

Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled Electrician to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems and equipment in a variety of settings. This role requires a strong understanding of electrical systems, as well as the ability to work effectively with hand tools and power tools. The Electrician will ensure that all work is completed in accordance with safety regulations and industry standards.

Duties

  • Install, maintain, and repair electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures.
  • Troubleshoot electrical issues and perform necessary repairs to ensure optimal functionality.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications to determine the layout of electrical systems.
  • Use hand tools and power tools safely and effectively to complete tasks.
  • Conduct routine inspections of electrical systems to identify potential issues or areas for improvement.
  • Collaborate with other tradespeople to complete projects efficiently and safely.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations while performing duties on-site.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience as an Electrician or in a similar role is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical systems, wiring methods, and safety practices.
  • Proficiency in using hand tools and power tools relevant to the trade.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Relevant certifications or qualifications in electrical work are advantageous but not mandatory.
