Job Description

CHILDREN’S PERSONAL ASSISTANT / SUPPORT WORKER NEEDED

Reference Number:VAC/0125/04191

Closing Date:09/02/2025

Summary

We are looking for two individuals to work as a team and provide regular 2:1 support for our son.

Our child would benefit greatly from being able to experience new places (which will involve preplanning with us as his parents and involving our son in the planning to be able to prepare him as much as possible), building on his existing abilities, helping him develop new skills and expand his communication.

About the role

Our son is 15 years old and has a diagnosis of Autism. He has a great cheeky personality and has a fun, playful nature.

He’s very creative – enjoying drawing and animations. He enjoys going out in the car and getting out and about and getting an ice-cream.

He enjoys going the cinema trampoline parks and walks. He likes Super Mario and Luigi. He also loves Paddington bear.

Our son is unable to communicate verbally in coherent sentences, he will usually display as one or two words together (echolalic speech) which he repeats after he has heard them.

He uses visual aids and routine board/activity board in school to communicate but will not use these at home – it would be great for someone to help him use these when he is out and about, and being involved when looking at planning and days out with his personal assistants.

We want our son to be able to be supported to do things that he enjoys.

He can be complex in his behaviour and there are risks of him running off and climbing so we are seeking individuals with the relevant experience/ skills, who are able to actively engage with him, be able to use distraction techniques and are assertive and willing to get to know him. There is a risk assessment that successful applicants will work to when supporting our son.

Although the role may be challenging at times, it is a hugely rewarding job being a part of the team helping our son to thrive and develop.

Summary

I am looking for enthusiastic, reliable, and committed individuals to provide regular support for my daughter – to support her to live an enriching life that has structure and routine and to enable her to do the things that she enjoys.

About the role

My 25-year-old daughter is a sociable young lady (with family, staff, and familiar adults) who enjoys being out and about. She can be a very smiley young lady (She has an infectious smile!) who likes banter when in the right environment with the right support.

She lives with me and her younger brother in our home in Buckley, Flintshire.

My daughter has a great personality and a good sense of humour, and when there is routine in her life she is a happy pleasant young woman who loves singing and dancing.

She can say ‘nice drive’ when asking to go out and engages enthusiastically with support staff she knows and likes the opportunity of being outdoors.

She particularly enjoys swimming which is very important for her as it also help with weight management. She is more recently being supported to go shopping too.

My daughter displays less challenging behaviour when with familiar support staff and clear boundaries and routine are established – when there isn’t structure within her life, this can cause her stress, frustration, and anxiety.

My daughter has a diagnosis of Williams Syndrome, a significant learning disability, ADHD, Autism, Hyperacusis and a heart condition. She experiences speech and communication difficulties and can experience high, ongoing anxieties. She can be physically challenging if she is not receiving the right support to meet her assessed outcomes.

She can communicate verbally using simple, words and phrases however they are usually the same and repeated. She does understand some communication but needs time to process what is being said to her.

The role of the Personal Assistant is to support my daughter:

1. To assist my daughter to have opportunities within the community and to help support her to develop her social skills

4. To help her to continue to be active and to be encouraged with healthy eating

5. To help her build up her confidence whilst being assisted to remain safe.

6. To assist my daughter to have clear boundaries and structure within her life – this enables her the best opportunity to thrive and reduce her anxieties and frustrations.

7. To support her with her day-to-day needs including assistance with meals and personal care.

The kind of person I am looking for

  • I am looking for someone who has lots of patience, who is very kind and encouraging and has a calm approach. You must be able to provide an element of flexibility with the support.
  • The ideal person will have a good sense of humour and be able to spend time getting to know my daughter, and my daughter to get to know them. It will be a gradual process but rewarding – my daughter has a lovely personality when she feels able to relax with someone and has trust in them.
  • They should work in a way which promotes independence and supports abilities and strengths.
  • Experience in supporting someone with challenging behaviour is essential for this role as my daughter can be physically challenging if she is upset, or there is lack of structure and purpose in her life.

It would be an advantage if you will have up to date Boundary Training and RESPECT training

  • Someone who can provide encouragement, reassurance and praise.
  • A clean and full driving licence and access to a vehicle is essential
  • Enhanced DBS must be in place prior to support starting – the DBS is completed as no cost by my Local Authority

Summary

We are looking for the right support to enable our mum who is in her eighties to fulfill her wishes and be able to return home following a spell in a residential home.

About the role

Our mum has a great determination to remain as independent as possible. We are a very close and supportive family (mum has 6 adult children), and we would love to be able to help her return to her home which she loves and feels most settled.

A bit about mum:

Although Mum is not deemed to have capacity to make decisions, she likes to feel that she is the “boss” and she likes feeling that she is in control. She has a lovely dry sense of humour and can be the life and soul of a party, but also very much a closed and private individual as well

Although she is small in stature, she is very much a character.

She loves a good quiz and enjoys watching Countdown on TV. She likes playing bingo, reading and crosswords.

Mum does experience cognitive difficulties and short term memory difficulties. She can be unstead on her feet and at risk of falls.

We are looking for overnight support- helping mum with her routines, and providing reassurance and guidance if she wakes up in the night to reduce the risk of her falling.

The kind of person I am looking for

  • Someone who is patient and calm in their approach when providing support
  • Mum is a Welsh speaker so an individual who is able to also speak Welsh would be an advantage
  • Previous experience of supporting someone would be needed and if you have mental health experience – this would be an advantage.
  • A good sense of humour is essential.
  • You must be comfortable working in a home environment and be understanding and respectful of the situation.
  • You must be able to provide support in a professional, dignified, and respectful manner.
  • Enhanced DBS will be needed – this can be completed if needed
  • Full clean driving licence

What you can expect from me

 A friendly and welcoming workplace where you will feel valued

 Access to training and learning opportunities.

 5.6 weeks annual leave (pro-rata)

 Get to know a lovely lady and be an important part of her support.

 Good rate of pay.

Days and Times required

We are looking for a team of 3 individuals to provide overnight support over 7 days on a rota basis.

The support will start 8.30pm / 9.30pm pm and end at 9am
