Vegetable Preparation Operative (with Exceptional Knife Skills)

Barking, London


Salary: £12.50 – £14.50 per hour

Choice of 40 hours or 48 hours per week (Sunday – Friday) 9am start.

The Vegetable Preparation Operative is a highly skilled member of the team who not only is responsible for the efficient and safe preparation of vegetables for processing and packaging, but they are also highly skilled with a knife and able to do a variety of cuts including slice, dice, turn, brunoises and julienne to the strictest of specifications.

This role requires exceptional and exacting knife skills to prepare vegetables, ensuring the highest quality standards, and maintaining a clean and safe work environment. The operator will work closely with the production team to ensure the timely and high-quality output of prepared vegetables for further processing or packaging.


Accountabilities:


Vegetable Processing:

  • Wash, peel, chop, dice, slice, turn, brunoises and julienne vegetables to exacting customer specifications.
  • Safely use sharp tools/knives for cutting and trimming product to ensure high quality presentation and appearance.
  • Sort and inspect vegetables for quality, discarding any damaged or non-compliant items.


Quality Control:

  • Ensure vegetables meet customer specifications for size, appearance, and cleanliness.
  • Conduct routine checks for foreign materials and contaminants.
  • Ensure that all products meet food safety and hygiene standards.


Safety and Hygiene:

  • Follow all safety guidelines, operating procedures, and industry regulations to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Regularly clean and sanitize equipment, tools, and workstations.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure adherence to hygiene standards.


Record Keeping and Documentation:

  • Maintain accurate records of vegetable preparation, including batch numbers, quantities, and any issues encountered.
  • Report any mechanical issues or malfunctions with preparation equipment to the maintenance team.


Team Collaboration:

  • Work collaboratively with other team members, production supervisors, and managers to ensure smooth operations.
  • Assist in other areas of production as needed, including packaging or quality assurance.


To be successful in your application, we are looking for:

  • Professional knife skill experience in preparing a range of vegetables using peelers and knives.
  • Be able to do a variety of cuts including slice, dice, turn, brunoise, julienne etc.
  • Basic knowledge of food safety and hygiene standards.
  • Good attention to detail, with a focus on quality.
  • Physical stamina to stand for extended periods and lift heavy boxes if necessary.
