An exciting career opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our highly successful global company based in Farnborough.

The talented individual we are seeking will be a key member of a small team, responsible for the development, analysis and validation of Mechanical designs in accordance with product specification and project scope. You will work with a variety of key stakeholders as projects may consist of customer funded projects, R&D “New Product Introduction” projects, technology projects and sustainability initiatives.

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will play a key role in the research, development and implementation of high temperature and nuclear imaging products. Working alongside a multi-disciplined team, you will be responsible for optimising existing processes, driving innovation, and leading projects from conception to completion.

This role requires a seasoned professional with extensive experience in mechanical engineering, a strong technical background, and the ability to lead and mentor a team of engineers. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of delivering innovative solutions, managing complex projects, and driving continuous improvement in engineering processes.

This is a full-time role based in Farnborough and belongs to the Technologies Group, EMEA and Asia reporting to the Projects & Design Team Manager.

Key Responsibilities:

The key responsibilities of the Senior Mechanical Engineer include, but are not limited to:

  • Mentoring Mechanical Engineers to generate a culture of empowerment, individual responsibility and stretch to improve their own skill sets and enhance the company’s capabilities.
  • Assist in providing high quality, smooth operation and oversight of mechanical discipline, including administrative requirements as required.
  • Leading mechanical aspects of Design reviews with internal and external customers.
  • Mechanical Design and integration with other Design specialities, such as electronic design and software development.
  • Creating sketches, outline drawings, detail drawings and assembly drawings.
  • Design for manufacture, ensuring products are safe, reliable, and meet required industry standards.
  • Assess design compliance and prepare Technical Construction Files for product compliance verification.
  • Design verification and functional testing.
  • Generating reports, calculations, test procedures, manuals, and master data within the ERP system (Item data, BOMs, Routes).
  • Providing peer checks within the design release process (Technical content, Standards, Fit, Form and Function).

The Person

The key skills and qualities of a Senior Mechanical Engineer are:

Essential

  • Qualified to a minimum degree level in relevant field.
  • Strong and demonstrable experience of ‘hands on’ mechanical design and development using 2D & 3D CAD software (preferably Solid works and AutoCAD).
  • Good and demonstrable knowledge RoHS.
  • Good appreciation for electrical and electronic technologies
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Strong project management and organizational skills
  • Ability to review and work with stakeholders to prioritise workload of self and the mechanical team.
  • Excellent communication skills, time management and organisational skills

Desirable

  • 10 years + experience.
  • Up-to-date relevant knowledge of engineering and of industry best practice.
  • Experience of working on New Product and Development Introductions.
  • Experience of preparing cost sheets for Sales Enquires.
  • Experience in Nuclear and High temperature applications.
  • Good and demonstrable knowledge of Export Control and WEEE Compliance.

Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud. Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction projects. We are looking for a passionate, high-energy individual to help build the cloud datacenters that power the world’s largest online services.
This Senior Mechanical Engineer position will fulfill an on-site role at Microsoft’s London datacenters supporting ongoing construction activities. This role will serve as a daily on-site presence to review progress and support quality design of multiple concurrent datacenter builds. The position will be responsible for monitoring progress for compliance with construction documents from initial stages through commissioning and work closely with the engineering, procurement, controls and construction teams. Additionally, this role will provide project management, technical direction, decision-making and overall leadership on behalf of engineering throughout the construction lifecycle up to and including the turnover to Microsoft Datacenter Operations. As such they will support multi-discipline coordination, issue identification and resolution, continuous improvement efforts, and the ongoing documentation of project learnings for incorporation into future designs.

Responsibilities


Core Responsibilities:
  • Serve as the on-site Mechanical engineering and project management representative throughout construction of a multi-year datacenter campus development.
  • Perform regular site walks to observe progress, review construction vs design intent, and flag potential concerns for engineering review.
  • Close working relationship with all MSFT site personnel – attending construction-based quality and assurance meetings, attend schedule and milestone review sessions, close monitoring of Mechanical and BAS related risk items with the appointed design AE (Architect/Engineer) Consultant SMEs
  • Review construction drawings, specifications, design guides/standards, sequences of operation, and commissioning documents for technical compliance.
  • Support submittal review, RFI responses, and commissioning activities.
  • Facilitate timely response and enable seamless project execution.

Capabilities
  • Ability to review construction drawings, project specifications, and equipment submittals against construction activities to track progress and review potential issues.
  • Strong experience with the design and operation of air handling units, pumps, chillers, fans, and other mechanical systems.
  • Possess a high level of understanding of commercial and industrial architecture and engineering with a primary focus on datacenter design.
  • Knowledge of construction techniques and terminology including the ability to read and interpret construction drawings and requirements documents is essential.
  • Working knowledge of Building Automation Systems (BAS), Direct-Digital Control (DDC), and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC).
  • Must possess strong leadership competencies and willingness to collaborate and work cross- functionally to maximize business results and positive customer experiences.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills at varying levels of business up to and including business executives.
  • Able to work with other technical and non-technical groups in a fast-paced environment and do so with an even temperament.
  • Be a person of integrity, be methodical, detailed-oriented with a strong work ethic.
  • Candidate must possess strong written and verbal communication skills.

Required Qualification
  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND solid technical mechanical engineering experience.
