Assistant Gardener
Job Description
Overview
We are seeking an enthusiastic Assistant Gardener to join our friendly garden team. Working alongside an experienced Head Gardener and another team member, the Assistant Gardener will help with the development and care of a site with significant horticultural variety and interest.
Whilst we welcome applicants with existing professional gardening experience and qualifications, we also aim to provide a positive and supportive environment for any candidate seeking to improve their skills and knowledge whilst working with us.
Place of Work
The gardens are set within a 60 acre estate, comprising woodland belts, ponds, streams and pasture. Ornamental beds have been planted around the main house, enhancing stunning views out to the wider landscape. Orchards and a productive garden provide fruit, flowers and vegetables for use in the house. The estate has modern facilities and equipment for the use of the garden team, including a newly built break room with separate kitchen and toilet.
About the role
The Assistant Gardener will play a key role in our garden team, helping maintain high stands of presentation and care across the estate and gardens. Whilst the focus of this role is horticultural, the Assistant Gardener may also be required to help with general maintenance and pet care duties on site, from time-to-time.
Responsibilities
- Ensure the gardens and wider estate are kept tidy and well-presented, caring for the plants, lawns, water features, woodlands and meadows on site.
- Carry out regular maintenance of the lawns and grassland, including mowing with both hand-pushed and ride-on mowers. The use of petrol-powered strimmers is also required.
- Help with the propagation and growing of fruit, vegetables and cut-flowers in the productive garden.
- Assist the Head Gardener with the preparation, planting, pruning and weeding of ornamental beds and borders.
- Help with woodland management tasks such as hedge and tree planting, fencing works, pruning and hedge-cutting.
- With support from the Head Gardener, ensure that all garden equipment and machinery on site is regularly checked, cleaned and well-maintained.
- Assist with general maintenance duties on site, as requested by the Head Gardener.
- Take all reasonable care for your own health, safety and welfare, along with that of all other people on site.
Candidate requirements
- A positive and enthusiastic ‘can-do’ attitude.
- Good physical health, due to the hilly nature of the site.
- Whilst any horticultural qualifications are valuable assets (e.g. RHS Level 2), we are prepared to provide suitable training to advance the right candidate’s skills.
- A love of nature and a desire to care for the outdoors.
If you have the enthusiasm and dedication to succeed in our Assistant Gardener role, working within a friendly team at a fantastic site, then we would love to hear from you!
