An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Older Peoples’ Psychological Service, alongside the Community Mental Health teams, in the North Kent Directorate. This post would suit someone who has a genuine interest in working therapeutically with this varied and rewarding client group. An understanding of the needs of people with mental health difficulties as well as of those living with dementia, and the ability to work with people who have cognitive difficulties, is essential.

We would be happy to receive applications from recently qualified Trainee Clinical Psychologists to recruit into a Band 7/8a preceptorship role. In this circumstance, the post holder would start on band 7 and move upwards. Please read band 7 & 8a job description and person specification.

You will work as part of the Older Peoples Psychological Services, alongside Community Mental Health Teams based in Medway & Swale, focussing your time in Memory services & enhancing the provision of psychological approaches for Older People. The role involves multidisciplinary teamwork with other community & inpatient colleagues to provide a comprehensive service to older people with a wide range of complex mental health difficulties and dementia. Experience of neuropsychological assessment for dementia is a key requirement for this post. You will be contributing to key priorities in Older People’s psychological services and holding responsibility for line management & clinical supervision of qualified & junior psychology & multidisciplinary (MDT) staff. The role will also involve providing consultation to carers, families & teams, participating in multidisciplinary staff development and contributing to group work. Undertaking service evaluations & audits across the North Kent Directorate to enhance service provision of psychological interventions to older people is also a key part of the role. The post holder will be expected to travel to other work bases, as required by the responsibilities of the post.

You will work as part of the Older Peoples Psychological Services, alongside Community Mental Health Teams based in North Kent. You will be focussing your time mainly on Medway & Swale Memory services & enhancing the provision of psychological interventions for Older People in Swale. The role will revolve around neuropsychological assessments, as part of dementia diagnostic processes, as well as on individual and group therapeutic work. There will also be opportunities to work with families and carers, colleagues from other professional backgrounds and external agencies. There will be opportunities to contribute to service evaluation and audit projects. You will benefit from high quality clinical and managerial supervision. Participation in a range of available CPD activities, as well as peer support, is encouraged. The post holder will be part of the Kent & Medway Older Peoples Psychological Service, which includes clinical psychologists, psychotherapists, art therapists, music therapists, counselling psychologists, trainee psychologists, clinical associate psychologists, assistant psychologists and psychology placement students.

Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities Communication and Working Relationships Patients, family and carers: To communicate in a highly skilled and sensitive manner with patients who may have specific difficulties in understand and/or communicating and who may be hostile, antagonistic or highly emotionally disturbed. Multidisciplinary team colleagues: To work closely with colleagues in the multi-professional gender identity service on a day to day basis. To contribute to the teams engagement including liaising with a wide range of professionals and agencies. Health & social care staff: To communicate with a wide range of health & social care staff in a range of settings in a highly skilled and sensitive manner, complex and sensitive information concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment plans of patients under the services care.

To provide support & guidance in the application of psychological principles and techniques, and to foster reflective practice. Senior managers & professional staff: To maintain and build good working relationships with senior professional staff and managers across the gender identity service and in DPT to foster a positive approach to gender service provision and to enable effective negotiation. Planning and Organisation The service: To plan and prioritise own workload, balancing the demands of patient care, support and guidance of carers and professionals and service research and development activities. To contribute to the planning and organising of the psychological service within the gender identity service and to contribute to the development and improvement of provision of psychological services to best meet the organisations strategy and priorities.

The multidisciplinary service: To provide psychological knowledge to the multiprofessional planning, development and marketing of the gender identity service. Responsibility for Judgement and Analysis To provide specialist psychological expertise and advice. To provide psychological therapies/other therapies, developing specialist psychological formulations and assessments of clients, formulating plans for their psychological treatment and implementing specialist psychological interventions for individuals, carers, families and groups. To support the Senior Psychologist by undertaking service development and redesign projects and coordinating the resulting work within the team.

Responsibility for Patient Care, Treatment and Therapy Assessment, formulation & intervention: To make highly skilled evaluations and decisions about assessment, treatment and discharge, including the management of risk. To contribute to assessments to aid care pathway planning and to inform decisions about eligibility for gender service interventions.
