Complex Injury Assistant Lawyer (Defendant)

Job Purpose:
We are seeking an experienced Assistant Lawyer at NQ – 3 years PQE looking to grow and develop further in defending complex injury claims. The role is ideal for a driven and detail-orientated professional who has experience of either assisting on large loss / CAT cases and/or has carried their own multi-track caseload. We are happy to consider both defendant and claimant experience.

This role is working with Lead Lawyer Libby Ferrie. Libby and her team handle a mixed portfolio of RTA, EL & PL cases, above £500K up to £20 million with average values around the 1-5 million pounds. Libby’s caseload is predominantly brain injury as well as amputations, spinal and multi-injuries. She is the lead contact for Keoghs’ Special Interest Group focusing on brain injury. Libby promotes a very collaborative and supporting team environment, her team is made up of 2 Large Loss Lawyers an Assistant and a Paralegal. Libby is keen to see individuals develop and is looking for someone ambitious and keen to progress both in case handling and client interaction.


Key Responsibilities

  • Case Management – Working as part of a small team you will support the Lead Lawyer with her high value, complex injury Defendant RTA, EL, PL caseload.
  • Accountability – You will be accountable for communicating & developing relationships with clients as well as the claimant’s legal team. You will also be responsible for maintaining exceptional levels of service by proactive case management.
  • Research & Analysis – Conduct thorough legal research and analyse medical records, reports and expert witness statements to prepare strong defences
  • Court Representation – Be part of a team representing clients in hearings, joint settlement meetings, mediations, arbitrations and trials.
  • Development – As well as having the drive and determination for your own career enhancement you will be fully engaged in developing more junior members of the team. You will be able to delegate appropriately and guide in terms of technical ability and achievement of objectives – team success is paramount!


Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

You will be an experienced lawyer with the following as a minimum:
  • Qualified solicitor or CILEX (equivalent to NQ-3 years PQE).
  • Experienced in assisting on Large Loss / CAT cases
  • Defendant and/or Claimant RTA and/or EL/PL experience will be considered
  • Understanding of case law and litigation practice and process, and Court Practice Rules as relevant to high value claims as well as being comfortable researching and/or analysing various legal principles to provide comprehensive advice.
  • Strong technical knowledge
  • Excellent organisational and IT skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to colleagues, clients and third parties.

This role offers and excellent opportunity to work with Aaron Reynard in the Complex Injury Claims Team dealing with large loss claims. In this role you will assist a Large Loss lawyer on complex, high value multi-track and catastrophic injury claims which will include RTA claims. Experience of indemnity, liability and complex medical issues is preferred and excellent attention to detail essential.

Your work will be supervised and feedback given. The role also includes the need to engage with sophisticated senior claims handlers in long-standing insurance clients. In this role you may also be required to assist your Lead Lawyer in activities which enhance and develop Keoghs’ profile.


Key Responsibilities

You will work as part of a team progressing each file from receipt of papers from the insurer client to resolution of the claim.

The role will include:

  • Working with the Lead Lawyer to manage a caseload of complex injury claims including high value multi-track and catastrophic injury claims involving brain injury, spinal cord injury, amputation and fatal claims.
  • Communicating with sophisticated insurer clients, dealing with their queries and updating them as the matter progresses.
  • Forensic analysis of voluminous quantum evidence, preparing chronologies, identifying anomalies and other relevant information across various sources and categories of evidence.
  • Using your existing knowledge of complex injury symptomology to identify relevant issues within medical records in order to instruct medical experts, drawing key issues to their attention.
  • Critical analysis of sources of liability evidence and identifying any gaps.
  • Drafting concise technical advice on all aspects of claim handling to include advice on indemnity, liability, quantum and causation issues and claims resolution for strategy discussion with the Lead Lawyer.
  • Proactively identifying next steps required on matters, discussing those aspects with the Lead Lawyer and taking action as agreed.
  • Interviewing witnesses and drafting statements.
  • Liaising with parties involved in claims including the insured, insurer, witnesses etc.
  • Drafting pleadings and applications.
  • Instructing counsel and attending conferences, JSMs, mediations both remotely and in person.
  • Attend court in person or by telephone, attend trials, settlement conferences etc as required.
  • Delivery of agreed performance targets and quality standards.
  • Delegate assigned tasks for a Legal Assistant and/or Paralegal and be fully engaged in their development in terms of technical ability and achievement of objectives.

Working Hours

Assistant Lawyer – Catastrophic Loss / Complex Injury (Solicitor / Legal Executive / Paralegal / Lawyer)

Your Role:
As our next Assistant Lawyer to join the Bolton office, you will be working alongside 2 Senior Lawyers within the team working on high value, complex injury cases which range in value up to £1million. The cases you will work on are a mix from a couple of well-established clients as well as the MIB. They cover orthopaedic injuries, minor-to-moderate brain injuries, indemnity issues, complex polytrauma, fatal cases, ID fraud issues and MIB clause A issues, seatbelt intoxication, drug use to cover a few.
The role would suit someone who has a range of experience in RTA, someone looking for a supportive role in order to progress their own career. Ideally, we are looking for RTA intermediary track experience as a minimum as well as someone being hardworking, proactive, efficient and keen to learn.


Key Responsibilities


As Assistant Lawyer your role will include:
  • TEAMWORK: Working with the 2 Senior Lawyers in the team, you will help manage their caseloads of complex injury claims consisting of claims typically valued up to £1m.
  • COMMUNICATE: with insurer clients, dealing with their queries and updating them as the matter progresses.
  • ANALYSIS: Forensic analysis of voluminous quantum evidence
