We’re looking for a Design Manager to join our Natural Resources team, working on our Thames Water Mogden treatment work site for AMP7/8. In this role you’ll oversee the design phase of construction projects on wastewater treatment upgrades and resilience works.

Responsibilities

We’re looking for a Design Manager to join our NRNN business unit. You’ll be responsible for ensuring technically compliant, cost-effective, carbon- and water-considerate solutions are developed during the concept and detailed design phases, as well as the technical assurance of as-built designs and variations to the contract. Ensuring the schemes meet the Client’s AMP objectives and regulatory commitments with respect to both performance and programme you’ll additionally aim to deliver optimum cost benefits for the Client and, where possible, exceed regulatory allowances.

Your day to day will include:

  • Performance-manage the design team in terms of time, cost, quality, and health and safety, including agreeing on and monitoring targets and providing feedback.
  • Contributing to and managing the project programmes for design, emphasizing the importance of task planning and short interval control within the context of the wider project planning.
  • Working with Kier Project Engineers to carry out technical design reviews and manage the outputs of these reviews through the design review register in coordination with the allocated design partner.
  • Checking and accepting designs, instigating project reviews as necessary.
  • Seeking to optimize the design process by leveraging previous designs and standard designs, incorporating lessons learned within Kier and, if applicable, partner organizations.

What are we looking for?

This Design Manager is great for you if you have:

  • Lengthy proven industry experience and a BEng/MEng qualified engineer.
  • Proven people and project management skills with prior experience as a Design Manager/Principle Engineer within the Water Industry, or a similar process industry such as Oil & Gas, Petro Chem, Food and Beverage, Pharmaceuticals.
  • Experience of the interaction between technical disciplines; Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Control and Automation.
  • Good understanding of P&ID’s.

The Design Engineer role will involve the design and development of sheet metal projects, mainly stainless.

The ideal candidate will be experienced in:

-Working directly with customers to establish their requirements and the management of individual projects day today.

-You will be responsible for all mechanical aspects of the design including static load, dynamic load and vibration.

We are looking to recruit two experienced Design Managers who will be responsible for the management, control of Design Management within our Care and Residential Projects. You must have experience within the Construction industry as a Design Manager and be able to multi-task and hold a high level of attention to detail.


Role Responsibilities

  • Ensuring Building Regulations are met within the design process
  • Ensuring designs are compliant with Planning Conditions placed on the project
  • Ensuring the Employers Requirements are complied with
  • Preparing design status reports for each project
  • Ensuring the internal drawing management process is met and meets the requirements of RIBA
  • Collating and organising technical building information from the Architect, Structural/Civil Engineer and M&E designers
  • Investigating and offering technical advice on factors that affect building developments, including user needs, site and building surveys, and regulatory requirements
  • Monitoring designs for Health and Safety and contributing to risk assessments
  • Coordinating detailed design information
  • Preparing specifications for construction work
  • Coordinating plans and documents for statutory approvals
  • Coordinating the Design Team in the preparation of conceptual drawings
  • Coordinating applications for approval by regulatory bodies
  • Chairing Design Team meetings with Architects, Structural Engineers and Consultants. Contributing to meetings and document preparation
  • Complete review of all project drawings and specifications issuing technical queries were required and ensuring these are fully resolved by the design team including subcontractors with design responsibility
  • Researching new design processes, building legislation and technology
  • Ensure timely, presentable, consistent and high level of quality design information both internally and externally
  • Good working knowledge of building standards such as RIBA, BREEM etc.
  • Working within the Design Team for each assigned project including key scope, schedule and cost
  • Ensuring that the Design Team coordinate and follow-up with the Client prior and during project execution
  • Ensuring that the Design Team coordinate and follow-up with estimation, coordination, and site installation managers
  • Support the delivery team in project delivery

Essential

  • Experience of all aspects civil engineering projects from either design or contracting background
  • A degree or equivalent in a related engineering subject (e.g. civil, electrical, mechanical) and/or equivalent experience.
  • Clear understanding of the commercial requirements of delivering complex multidisciplinary design and build projects and an appreciation of delivery risk.

Desirable

  • Experience of undertaking feasibility studies, options appraisal and concept design, and/or outline and detailed design for water company clients and design and build contractors.
  • Broad knowledge of multiple engineering disciplines (Mechanical, Electrical, Process).
  • Chartered or Incorporated with a relevant institution e.g. ICE, CIWEM or working towards it.

You’ll play a pivotal role in overseeing the design phase of civils based construction projects, ensuring they are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. This work is with Thames Water on their sewage treatment Waste Asset Assurance Programme (WAAP), for new and existing infrastructure assets (below ground) and non-infrastructure assets (above ground).

Your day to day will include:

  • Coordinating with architects, engineers, and other design consultants to develop comprehensive design solutions.
  • Reviewing and approving design drawings, specifications, and other project documents.
  • Ensuring adherence to design standards, building codes, and client requirements.
  • Developing and implementing effective design management processes and procedures.
