About the Role: Maintenance Operative

We are currently looking to recruit an experienced Maintenance Operative who is passionate about creating a well-maintained, pleasant environment where residents feel safe, respected, and supported. Main Responsibilities:

  • Ensure premises and grounds are maintained to a high standard, creating a safe, comfortable, and pleasant environment.
  • Maintain records per company policies, including work and inspection logs.
  • Conduct daily maintenance book checks and address issues promptly.
  • Perform weekly user tests on fire alarms, fire doors, call points, fire exits, water temperatures, and monthly tests on emergency lighting and smoke/heat detectors.
  • Ensure fire appliances are regularly checked and serviced by qualified engineers and keep records.
  • Assist with monthly fire drills and help update evacuation procedures alongside the Care Home Manager.
  • Stay updated on required maintenance checks.
  • Know the location of fuse boxes, stopcocks, and other critical shut-offs.
  • Support health and safety inspections, including Portable Appliance Testing.
  • Provide on-call emergency support outside of regular hours when needed.
  • Handle driving duties and assist with deliveries as required.
  • Oversee groundskeeping, including grass cutting, hedge maintenance, and weeding.
  • Perform general maintenance, such as painting, basic joinery, and equipment checks.
  • Liaise with contractors for specialized jobs and supervise deliveries.

Essential Skills and Requirements:

  • Understanding of the needs of older or disabled individuals requiring care and support.
  • Hands-on approach to a physically demanding role.
  • Basic knowledge of maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Knowledge of health and safety standards.
  • Full driving license.
  • Strong numeracy skills.

Maintenance Operative

Part time 22.5 hours per week Wed to Fri

Salary: £22 425 to £24 000 per annum FTE depending on experience

The role:

  • To be part of the Maintenance team and to support the Maintenance manager and Facilities Manager in maintaining a variety of building types to a good standard, including (but not restricted to) decorating, woodwork, plumbing and electrics.
  • To work as a member of a small team which may include an apprentice with learning disabilities.
  • To maintain accurate records of vehicle usage and individual timesheets.
  • To drive the Trust minibuses and other Trust vehicles for their local safety checks.
  • To work within health and safety guidelines and any relevant organisational policies which affect the area of work.
  • To attend training courses when required.
  • To carry out manual handling and occasional heavy lifting tasks.

What we are looking for?

  • To have good all-round knowledge of building services.
  • To understand the importance of working within the requirements of Health and Safety legislation.
  • Ideally able to drive, holding a current, clean and valid driving licence D1 unrestricted or a PCV licence, D1 restricted (car licence obtained prior to 01/01/1997) considered.

What will I be doing?

  • Take an active role in improving the operational standards of the club/s by using your skills to positively impact the member experience
  • Maximise the member experience and member participation through great facility standards, in house preventative and reactive maintenance, attention to detail and quick response times to defects by effectively managing a property management system
  • You will know your club/s and engage with members about their activities and seek ways to improve their experience of DL at every opportunity, through the breadth of facilities
  • Support the leadership team in ensuring all Health and Safety requirements and documentation is maintained in a timely and accurate way
  • Support the review and resolution of member feedback comments and complaints in a timely manner
  • Manage repairs and ordering systems, following our operating and finance procedures

We are seeking an experienced Maintenance Operative with a positive and proactive attitude to join our team at our Rehoming Centre ensuring the centre is safe and fit for business purposes.

We’re looking for someone able to carry out planned and reactive maintenance in the rehoming centre environment, including all equipment and vehicles associated with the rehoming centre. You’ll also support the management team in the smooth running and professional presentation of the rehoming centre.

About this job:

As a Maintenance Operative, you’ll:

  • Grounds, building and vehicle maintenance, undertaking reactive repair of damaged or non-working items.
  • Liaise with Property department, Health & Safety and Facilities department on routine visits and audits; notifying the appropriate department of potential or developing issues and discussing routine work to be undertaken.
  • Be a nominated fire warden.
  • Liaise with contractors.
  • Identify, take ideas from others, and implement works to enhance the centre environment.
  • Logistical support for the movement of goods, people and dogs.

About you:

A qualified tradesperson or experienced handyperson you’ll a good understanding of routine maintenance in a practical working environment and an awareness of current Health & Safety legislation. You will be an excellent communicator, have a problem-solving attitude and keen eye for detail. But above all you’ll have an empathy towards the dogs in the centre and a commitment to the aims and values of Dogs Trust.

Job Description

We are looking for a “hands on” experienced and skilled maintenance person who is able to lead a small team. You will be responsible for carrying out all building maintenance and building improvement works across our group consisting of sixteen day nurseries located in Essex, London, Middlesex, Kent, Surrey and Berkshire.

You must have a good working knowledge of all trades and have your own tools to carry out all aspects of building maintenance both planned and reactive.

Must be highly skilled as a carpenter.

Other skills required but not exhaustive:

· Plastering

· Brickwork

· Painting and Decorating

· Tiling

· Plumbing

· Electrical works – basic

A suitable candidate must have the ability to work on their own, identify maintenance tasks and deal with them diligently and professionally. All maintenance will be required to be carried out to a high specification.

The role requires you to work 5 days per week (8.00am to 5.30pm with a 1 hour lunch break), including, but not always, weekends and/or bank holidays (generally 2 Saturdays per month).

You must have a clean driving licence and be able to drive a panel van up to 3.5 tonne. You must be a careful and considerate driver with no accidents.

A DBS check will be required to identify any criminal convictions or cases pending. The successful candidate will be expected to have no previous or current convictions.
