Macklin Care Homes are excited to announce the opening of a new Mental Health Residential Facility at Our Lady’s Care Home, Belfast. The facility will aim to provide mental health services including mental health assessment, treatment, and therapeutic work.

As a result, we are actively recruiting for experienced Support Workers within the field of Mental Health who will use their compassion and clinical experience to help deliver the exceptional levels of resident care we are known for and are passionate about making a difference to the lives of people who have a variety of mental health conditions.

With no two days the same, you will enjoy a wide range of varied responsibilities, from ensuring that care-plans are comprehensive to making sure that decisions are acted upon, and if necessary, incorporated into a resident’s care-plan and individualised care packages.


About The Role


Professional Responsibilities:

  • Experience working within a mental health environment.
  • Good working knowledge of The Mental Health Order (1986).
  • An understanding of current approaches to mental health practice.
  • Ability to collaborate with a challenging resident group in a positive manner.
  • Ensuring care-plans are comprehensive and understandable by the resident.
  • Supporting, encouraging, and prompting residents with their medication.
  • Accurately maintain documentation both manually and electronically.
  • Ensure house rules are kept and adhered to, providing a safe environment.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, residents, and visitors.
  • Assisting residents with booking and attending appointments.
  • Support residents in daily tasks; self-care, shopping, and household tasks.
  • Promoting residents to develop their skills and increase their independence.

Required Criteria

  • An understanding of current approaches to mental health practice.
  • Awareness of the local services available to those with mental health needs.
  • Understanding of types of mental health illnesses and the level of care residents will require.
  • Caring, empathetic and compassionate nature.


Desired Criteria

  • Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care (or equivalent).
  • Experience working within a Care Home setting or environment.

Job Description

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Mental Health Support Worker to join our dedicated team based in Port Talbot on a 16 – 20 hour per week contract. This is for a mental health service and the ideal candidate would have knowledge or experience in working with someone who has a mental health diagnosis.

While driving is preferred for this role, it is not essential.

Mirus is a not-for-profit charitable organisation, working in partnership with the people they support, their families and other partners, to deliver high quality, person-centred support services for people with a disability. We have been supporting people in Wales for over 35 years and currently support over 350 people in ten different local authority areas.

The service is made up of 6 individual flats within one building. This is an extra care service and we support people to live independent lives.

We support individuals to meet their personal outcomes such as getting back into employment, volunteer work, maintaining their home, accessing their community and developing their confidence.


What will you be doing:

  • You will develop, implement, and review a range of individual support plans to enable the person that you will support to lead a fulfilling life.
  • You will provide support with a range of tasks which may include household and domestic tasks, shopping, diet/food preparation, personal care, personal hygiene, dressing and personal appearance.
  • As a Mental Health Support worker we will support you in studying towards your QCF Level 2 Health and Social Care, which is completely funded by Mirus.
  • You will work alongside other professionals such as care managers, community nurses and occupational therapists to deliver high quality support.


Individual and Team Responsibilities:

  • To offer one to one support to help people take small steps, regain control and deal with their immediate issues.
  • To help the people you support to build resilience for their own futures
  • Work closely with your team and other internal/ external partnerships to build and maintain excellent working relationships to ensure a seamless ‘team around the person’ approach.
  • To participate and contribute to your own reflective practice, Post incident support and what is and is not working sessions.
  • To participate in supervision and appraisal sessions with managers
  • To attend and actively participate in all relevant training events. To keep accurate records of training and personal development
  • To prepare to register and update learning with Social Care Wales as a social care worker within the agreed timescale set
  • To complete relevant qualifications in order to maintain registration as a social care worker with Social Care Wales
  • To participate and contribute to team meetings, area meetings and external meetings
  • To have an awareness of, and comply with the Mirus Equal Opportunities Policy
