News Reporter

Job Description

MAIN OBJECTIVES:

• Sourcing news stories and features for 18 monthly hyper-local magazines
• Pitching editorial ideas to the team
• Conducting interviews for stories and advertorials both in person and over the phone
• Managing/creating the news list for the magazines
• Ensuring the magazines have a balance of editorial coverage (news, crime, features)
• Suggesting front cover ideas to the news editor
• Keeping the news editor informed as to what my strongest stories are for each magazine and which have the potential to be leads or double page spreads
• Writing catchy headlines and picture captions
• Sourcing images to run alongside editorial
• Going out to photograph events/places/people if a suitable image cannot be sent
• Ensuring the originality of all photographs (copyright issues)
• Keeping on top of the local and national news to ensure topical coverage and to find an ‘angle’ to current national stories that would work for our publication
• Maintaining strong relationships with the local dignitaries and residents of each community
• Attending council meetings and events
• Uploading stories and images to the website
• Updating multiple social media accounts
• Proofing my own and others’ work to ensure grammar and spelling are correct
• Writing advertorials for clients

JOB REQUIREMENTS

• NCTJ Qualified or appropriate experience
• A passion for writing and publishing
• Good news judgement
• Able to work as part of a team
• Good people skills
• Reactive to hard and immediate news and proactive in difficult situations
• Good time management
• Strong command of English grammar, spelling and comprehension
• Excellent telephone manner
• Must be able to multi task and work under pressure
• Please note this job is office-based.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: £23,800.00-£24,500,000.00 per year
