Role Summary

The Occupational Health Advisor role at MCL is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and highly organised individual to join our expanding team, supporting our clients to achieve their statutory duties to protect and promote the health, safety and welfare of people at work. We’re looking for a reliable and motivated professional with excellent interpersonal and organisational skills who is committed to ongoing professional development, has the ability to analyse & interpret data and problem-solving skills to meet the needs of the business and clients. The successful applicant will be a self-starter who takes initiative and is comfortable working in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment. They will be comfortable troubleshooting and problem-solving and have a passion for supporting the success of the organisation.

As part of the MCL Medics team your key responsibilities include:

  • Noise management of NEMS database and routine personal monitoring and area monitoring.
  • COSHH custodian of database and engagement with work parties as required for guidance and advice.
  • Manual Handling – ensuring thorough audit process that staff and contractors have appropriate Manual Handling management systems in place.
  • Assist the Occupational Hygienist and relevant Terminal personnel in the review and update of Health Risk Assessments (HRAs) to identify health surveillance and health monitoring needs at Terminal.
  • Deliver and maintain the health surveillance programme, as identified by the Terminal HRA, and health screening in accordance with client standards.
  • Ensure compliance and understanding by conducting regular health related worksite audits.
  • Act as a Focal Point for the Terminal appointed First Aiders and provide regular non certificated refresher first-aid update training at site to keep skills up to date. Ensuring the site First Aid Needs Risk Assessment is current and up to date.
  • Provide support to HSE team for biological monitoring at Terminal, e.g. Benzene.
  • Work to strict protocols & procedures set by MCL Medics and in line with SEQOHS accreditation
  • Other occupational health focal point activities as required.

This permanent role will be 3 days per week working on-site for our client in Barrow-in-Furness.

What Are We Looking for?

  • RGN/RMN with prior Occupational Health Advisor experience
  • Current NMC Registration
  • Desirable: Occupational Health qualification; relevant experience considered
  • Proactive, friendly, and professional individuals with workload management confidence
  • Contribute towards safe working practices across the OH Delivery team
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to contribute ideas and suggestions for improvements in order to achieve more effective working practices
  • Good understanding of Microsoft packages, and comfortable in use of OH software

What you will be doing?

To provide professional comprehensive Occupational Health advice to management and staff on all matters relating to the health, safety and well-being of members of the Force and ensuring compliance with relevant legislative requirements.


Please note: Must be a registered nurse on part 1 of the NMC Register with a specialist

qualification in Occupational Health.

  • Undertake sickness absence consultations for Police officers and Police Staff and formulate management reports and rehabilitation programmes.
  • Triage Occupational Health referrals for assignment to the Occupational Health Adviser (OHA), Force Medical Adviser (FMA) or other specialist advisers.

Role Summary

The Occupational Health Advisor (OHA) is a people focused collaborator who is supportive of an inclusive environment, and plays a crucial role in leading the on-site Occupational Health service. The aim of the specialty is to support the prevention of work-related illness and injury by providing proactive robust clinical advice and recommendations to the company.

Reporting into the Health & Safety Manager, this role will deliver a full remit of Occupational Health support, completing clinical records in compliance with medical confidentiality guidelines and Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) expectations. The OHA will handle their own diary and case load and work autonomously as a specialist in the field of Occupational Health.

This is a part-time role based in Telford, on-site three days a week, with travel to Worcester twice a month.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide specialist advice and actionable recommendations to line managers and HR in relation to employees’ health concerns.
  • Complete fitness for work Health Assessments for new starters
  • Attend regular meetings with HR and Operational Managers, providing an overview of OH activities and updates on employee health issues including absence cases
  • Assist the HR Manager to monitor, review and develop Occupational Health Policies and procedures to ensure they meet current legislation and Health & Safety Executive (HSE) guidance on best practice and clinical standards recommendations
  • Assist with the implementation and running of the health surveillance programme in line with HSE guidelines including COSHH; Control of Noise AT Work Regs (2005), Control of Vibration at Work Regs (2005) and ensure clinical standards are met.
  • Support management with the completion of individual risk assessments and workplace assessments where a health need has been identified as a concern.
  • Support the site in developing its Mental Health wellbeing strategy
  • Proactively support the organisation in the delivery of wellbeing initiatives
  • Support with facilitating environmental surveys and provide Occupational Health related advice to colleagues
  • Deliver presentations / training sessions to promote health and wellbeing
  • Take part in departmental audits
The ideal candidate

Our ideal candidate is NMC Level One registered, with a relevant OH Diploma or degree (SCPHN preferable). An outstanding communicator; they’ll have a positive demeanour and form effective and proactive working relationships with Management teams, HR, Health and Safety, and employees. They should also be able to work closely with external bodies, GPs, Consultants, Health and wellbeing agencies. Experience of supporting unions to understand the role and purpose of Occupational Health would be great, but above all, we value a passion for improving the wellbeing of our people.
