In this vital role, you’ll be at the heart of our respected in-house legal service, where you’ll have the chance to handle cases right from start to finish, many of which are high profile and generate media interest. The Directorate of Legal Services (DLS) provides in-house legal services for the Met. Our paralegals provide high level legal support to lawyers whilst also conducting their own cases. As a paralegal you may be supporting the in-house lawyer teams in defending the Commissioner against a wide range of claims – everything from civil actions to employment tribunals; or working on inquests and public inquiries. You’ll help to prepare cases and carry out investigations, conduct research, gather evidence, interview witnesses and attend conferences and hearings. Our paralegals are case holders in a variety of areas which can include Disclosure, Safeguarding through protective measures and civil orders. You’ll handle each one from start to finish, investigating, instructing Counsel, giving advice and making decisions. As the face of the Met at court hearings and tribunals, you’ll do all you can to ensure cases are resolved fairly and professionally. Rest assured that you’ll have support and guidance from our expert Lawyers.

To join us, you’ll need an interest in the law. You will be representing the Met in court, so a familiarity with court procedures will help but is not a requirement. We are also looking for applicants to have the ability to deal with people at all levels, using strong communication skills and it is essential that you are well organised and able to meet strict deadlines. This post benefits from hybrid working in line with the Met Hybrid Working Policy (to work from the office at least three days a week with flexibility for the rest of the time, subject to operational requirements).

The Role:

  • Drafting and completing basic legal documents and forms with limited supervision
  • Drafting documents and letters of advice to clients under supervision
  • Setting up and managing envelopes in DocuSign
  • Sorting out formatting and cross-referencing in documents
  • Preparing payment forms and data room management
  • Researching legal issues on behalf of other fee earners
  • Engrossing, collating and redacting documents and preparing document bundles for fee earners as required
  • Taking responsibility for administrative tasks, i.e. coordinating the administration of seminars

Day to day

What You’ll Do:
Company Secretarial and Governance:
  • Ownership of organizational documents (e.g. board and shareholder resolutions, minutes of meetings and powers of attorney) for the European entities
  • Ownership of annual filings or updates relating to ultimate beneficial ownership and other regulatory requirements for the European entities
  • Working closely with the finance team for annual statutory filings and auditor appointments

Commercial:
