A day in the life of a Murphy Planning Manager:

  • Assign planning activities to planners including Responsible Managers.
  • Ensure that RIP’s continually look for most efficient access opportunities, working closely with project management team in securing engineering access & resources programme.
  • Oversee the RIP’s team identifying possession availability including implementation through Possession Planning System (PPS) and the Green Zone Access Manager (GZAM) for all project plans, where possible, to aid in the scheduling and delivery of schemes, resources, and plant
  • Ensure all possession documentation issued from routes / Engineering Access Planning (EAP) is reviewed and identify any changes or errors that would affect the safety of possessions
  • Where applicable, liaise with the National Supply Chain (NSC) for availability of haulage requirements including confirmation of bookings to assist in efficient delivery of projects. Identify key resource requirements to QT 50 ensuring all resources such as key wagons, tampers etc are booked and allocated.
  • Attend internal quarterly meetings to ensure RIP’s procedures are aligned throughout the business and quality is maintained.
  • Monitor performance data including the level of protection provided and the number of plans rejected or changed on site, ensuring the RIP’s teams are checking at least 20% of completed SSOW Packs (up to a maximum of 50 packs per period) to ensure that planning is sufficient and that the SSOW Pack has been completed correctly.
  • Ensure all findings from completed, returned, and checked SSOW Packs are informed to the specific individuals.
  • Ensure where possible, RIP’s team carry out site visits to ascertain site conditions prior to booking possessions and completion of SSOW Packs
  • Where necessary, write and conduct presentations for feedback to the planning team and wider Murphy team.
  • Participate in, and positively promote, the Murphy Culture Development Programme (leading to Zero Harm).

Join Our Dynamic Team as a Planning Manager!

Are you ready to take on an exciting and challenging role that puts you at the heart of our operations? Based in Pinxton, we are looking for a dedicated and strategic Planning Manager to oversee the effective and commercial planning of our KB fleet activities across the UK and Europe.

In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for ensuring seamless logistics for our event-based clients, requiring a deep understanding of European drivers’ hours and geography. Your expertise in holding an International CPC will be crucial in navigating the complexities of this position.

Reporting directly to the Transport Director, you will combine cost, operational, and financial awareness to make informed decisions based on real-time data. Your goal will be to deliver the most cost-effective and customer-centric solutions, ensuring our operations run smoothly and efficiently.

Given the nature of the events industry, flexibility is key. You may need to address issues outside typical working hours, including evenings, nights, and weekends on a rotating basis.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Ensure all confirmed jobs are placed into the live planning system for vehicle and driver allocation.
  • Manage the efficient planning of each event, considering compliance, cost efficiency, and required resources.
  • Manage client interactions via email and telephone, build operational solutions, and finalize costs.
  • Evaluate the use of subcontractors based on factual information and the impact on cost and profitability.
  • Manage and control subcontractor relationships, arranging vehicle and driver supply.
  • Manage resources for schedules requiring "double drives" and ensure a pool of available double manning drivers.
  • Understand and manage the impact of changes in customer requests.
  • Update and review planning systems to ensure accuracy and reflect the current situation.
  • Liaise regularly with Operational and Financial teams to ensure planned solutions are viable and achievable.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge on UK and European transport legislation and best practices.
  • Be aware of EU CPC and 90/180-day regulations and liaise with the Compliance Manager to ensure no driver exceeds these regulations.
  • Communicate effectively with the Transport Operations team to ensure smooth job execution.
  • Produce clear, accurate, and usable forecasts detailing specific requirements for immediate and future fleet and operational needs.
  • Report and highlight any resourcing issues or concerns in a timely manner and create cost-effective solutions.
  • Maximise fleet utilisation to deliver clients’ requirements cost-effectively.
  • Ensure all ad hoc or additional operational costs (tariffs, tolls, carnet requirements, extra days, etc.) are included in planning and cost models.
  • Arrange shunter driver requirements to ensure the yard is effectively organized for ease of access to all trucks and trailers.
  • Liaise with Compliance and Fleet Managers to arrange the repatriation of the Irish fleet when required.
  • Organise the transportation of wide loads, including police escorts, marker boards, permits, etc.
  • Work closely with drivers, warehouse staff, and other stakeholders to coordinate and communicate transportation plans effectively.
  • Strategically allocate resources to maximize fleet capacity while maintaining cost-effectiveness.
  • Identify potential logistical challenges and proactively develop solutions to ensure on-time deliveries and optimal resource utilisation.
  • Demonstrate the ability to analyse complex logistical challenges and implement effective solutions. Lead and motivate a team, fostering a collaborative and efficient work environment.

Person Specification

  • CPC and International CPC (essential)
  • Previous experience of working within a 3rd party haulage environment
  • Proven experience of a can-do, positive attitude with the proven ability to problem solve.
  • Previous experience of working in a cost driven organisation and practical knowledge of cost, budgeting and financial control within a profit & loss environment
  • Good IT skills covering Microsoft packages, with an excellent level of competency in MS Excel
  • Strong and up to date knowledge of driver compliance rules and regulations
  • An ability and desire to work with detail and to be accurate in the approach to work.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and a proven ability to build strong working relationships with internal stakeholders
  • History of working with numerical and financial data with GCSE Maths at a Grade C /Level 4 or higher (desirable)
  • A knowledge of UK, European and International geography
