The Role

We are looking for a Principal Electrical Engineer specialising in system engineering. The Principal Electrical Engineer will deliver industry leading solutions for high specifications Data Centre systems worldwide. The Principal Electrical Engineer will be a lead electrical engineer providing efficient Data Centre designs at all stages of the design. This is a full-time hybrid role located in our London office (3 days working from our UK Office (London Bridge), 2 days from home or 50% of the time in the office).


Role Responsibilities

  • Attend and/or lead client, design team, professional, contractor and site meetings.

  • Develop concept and detailed design of electrical services and associated controls.

  • Produce Schematics, specifications, calculations, equipment schedules and reports to meet the required industry and legal standards

  • Coordinate your designs with other disciplines.

  • Maintain a commercial awareness of projects, track hours versus agreed fees.

  • Agree any variations or changes to the design prior to allocating additional hours.

  • Monitor and review the quality of the work produced by graduate electrical engineers or electrical engineers.

  • Monitor and review the quality of the contractor’s electrical installations, ensuring they meet the client’s requirements and local standards / regulations.

  • Carry out validation reviews of contractor’s designs and specifications.

  • Carry out QA/QC inspections on site and produce associated reports.

  • Attend witness testing activities on site and produce associates reports.

  • The role will be primarily office based but will involve some site attendances (UK and International).

  • Be capable of taking the lead on projects with minimal input from management team.

  • Accountability for discipline delivery of professional services.

  • Provide direction, leadership and vision to the discipline project team.

  • Build strong working relationships across the team, client and overall stakeholders.

  • Represent the company in the appropriate manner relating to our Core Values & Culture.

  • A Bachelor’s degree (BEng or equivalent) or a Master’s degree in a relevant field is preferred. Vocational courses will also be considered if supported by relevant experience.

  • 6-15 years’ experience as an electrical engineer in building services.

  • Previous mission critical design experience in the data centre, clean tech or telecoms sectors working for consulting engineers is highly advantageous.

  • Proven ability to oversee projects from concept through to construction, including the commissioning phase.

  • Holder of a Chartered Engineer status or equivalent professional registration.

  • Willingness to mentor and support the growth of other team members.

  • Ability to prioritise personal and team workloads, work to tight deadlines, and stay within budget constraints.

  • Strong problem-solving capabilities.

  • Essential experience in power systems design, including HV/MV and LV systems.

  • Knowledge of generators, UPS systems, AC and DC power systems, and switchgear systems.

  • Good understanding of data centre power systems and general building services is essential.


Specific Requirements

  • Proactive communicator with excellent verbal and written English skills.

  • Strong relationship-building abilities at all organisational levels.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, BIM360, Autocad, Dialux, Revit, Amtech, SKM, ETAP or Easypower.

  • Experience working with and coordinating teams of 3–10 engineers, both locally and internationally.

  • Ability to identify and define scopes of work, design activities, and required timelines, as well as reviewing the value of design work.

  • Assist the Team Manager in preparation stage, reviewing documents and costs, and identifying project risks.

  • Capable of explaining and managing expectations and quality levels, and verifying quality levels after stage/project completion.

  • Skilled in producing technical specifications, reports, and a system design from scratch and/or should be capable of producing a detailed design based on technical starting points/specifications.

  • Depth of expertise in consultancy, front end and design stages of project delivery is required.

  • Essential knowledge of Mission Critical / Data Centre sector and a recent proven project track record.

  • Excellent relationship management skills with the ability to handle and develop key client interactions.

  • Strong organisational skills – with the ability to meet demanding project deadlines.

  • Strong sense of customer focus and internal teamwork.

As Principal Electrical Engineer your responsibilities will include.

  • Responsible for the delivery of legislative and corporate safety and engineering standards

  • Champion, role model and continuously improve all safety requirements, including the supervision of the technical support team and contractors, Includes the Permit to Work process, Risk assessments and method statements

  • Management of capital projects from initial feasibility study to final close out ensuring KPI’s for safety, cost, time & specification are met.

  • Lead root cause failure analysis and 4 step problem solving. Ensure actions are completed and closed out and shared with relevant parties.

  • Coach, develop, build capability, and consciously improve the way in which mill teams adhere to electrical mill processes and standards.

  • Champion the planning, implementation and continuation of other company wide programmes (such as LEAN, OPEX, P2030 best practise) that are identified within the mill’s asset roadmap.

  • Consciously improve the way in which activities are planned and scheduled, in a way which effectively integrates asset and business requirements to maximise people utilisation and equipment performance.

  • Transfer in depth technical knowledge of electrical equipment in areas of responsibility

  • Leading weekly asset team meetings. Be responsible for reviewing asset KPIs to drive improvement.

This role will provide technical leadership to the Electrical engineering resources, as part of our commitment to world-class engineering and technology, we’re building on our current electrical capability. Lending your expertise in all kinds of ways, you’ll help us achieve our ambitions across our production line operations. Reporting to a Mill Operations Manager, you’ll ensure assets are operating to their optimum efficiency to maximise output and ensure targets are consistently met. Your knowledge and expertise will be Integral to supporting the delivery of the mill’s improvement strategy, the holder of this role will have expertise that will span everything from Digital Control Systems to medium/high voltage distribution.

You will work a day shift, with the flexibility to support emergency call outs when required. Your focus will be to optimise and sustain tissue manufacturing assets, minimise machine downtime, and make cost-saving improvements. You’ll also be responsible for implementing new electrical engineering systems, optimising maintenance of existing systems and managing obsolescence programmes.

What’s more, you’ll train and mentor others, creating a legacy of best practice at our Barrow in Furness factory on the edge of the beautiful Lake district!
