Job Description

Exercise technical control of all aspects of manufacturing processes for silicon carbide heating element production.

Initiate and deliver continuous improvements to existing processes and production methods, working within the areas of safety, raw material selection, processing conditions, cost reduction, productivity improvement and the required specifications of the product.

Provide technical support for front line production management team.

Responsible for accepting and implementing new products and processes into the manufacturing environment.

Build good working relationships with suppliers of raw materials and consumables.

Process Control and Engineering

Ability to work with high degree of autonomy to ensure that all processes are compliant with yield expectations. To fulfill a technical/specialist role in the production environment for process issues where first line management require support and / or cannot resolve.

Continuous Improvement

· Drive initiatives to make process improvements and cost reduction using lean manufacturing and six sigma methodologies.

Communication

Ability to communicate at all levels, deal with complex technical problems whilst promoting change using influencing and persuading skills. Ability to prepare clear written reports detailing progress and recommend improvements as required.

Team Working

Contribute to, or lead teams focused on specific projects or initiatives.

Leadership

As an engineer with autonomy, a calm, collected approach to problem solving in the face of a fluid environment is required.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:

The Process Engineer will primarily be involved in the overall design of Blast Furnace systems and equipment. The role will involve understanding and assessing the Blast Furnace operationally and chemically, along with the ancillary process plant associated with the Furnace. The engineer will ensure that the blast furnace design is technically and operationally acceptable and operates safely in accordance with local regulations and Primetals’ design basis. The engineer will also be expected to cover a wide-ranging role being able to provide process knowledge during the Sales phase all the way through to a ‘hands-on’ approach during the commissioning of the plant.

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Equipment Design – Ensuring correct equipment selection and design during the pre-sales and the basic engineering stages of a project for both the blast furnace and associated equipment. During this stage adequacy of the equipment via the use of simulation and calculations will be utilized to ensure the process can achieve the criteria stipulated within the contract.

Drawing Generation – The creation of Piping and Instrument Diagrams (P&IDs) and Process flowsheets (PFD’s) are a key requirement. These documents are fed into engineering and used as a fundamental basis of design. They are fundamental to the success of the project and the engineer must have a basic knowledge around symbol selection, piping requirements and instrumentation selection.

Safety Studies – Risk assessments are a requirement at all stages of the project lifecycle within Primetals Technologies, standard guidance for each of these studies will be provided and adhered to by the engineer. A basic knowledge around Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOP) and Layer of Protections Analysis (LOPA) is advantageous.

Study / Report Writing – Being able to analyse operating data and produce recommendations / solutions in a clear and concise study document / report is deemed an essential part of the Process Engineer’s role.

Commissioning – At the end of the project it is expected that the process engineer attends site for the starting up of the project. The process engineer will be expected to support the commissioning manager in a role as commissioning engineer. During this time it will supplement the applicants office based knowledge with actual physical operating experience.

COMPETENCIES

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Strong communication skills at all levels – the ability to adapt style and approach when working with different stakeholders, both within and external to the business.
  • An understanding of basic Process Engineering skills e.g. Piping & Instrument Diagrams and Process Flow Sheets.
  • Health & Safety: Understanding the Health and Safety implications of work being carried out.
  • Health & Safety: An understanding of HAZOP and LOPA procedures.
  • A basic understanding of business and how the Process Engineer’s input can effect things such as Performance Guarantees, the cost of equipment, and project risk.
  • Self-motivated and proficient in time management.
  • IT literate especially with MS Office Suite.
  • Intercultural communication.

A willingness to travel around the world, sometime at short notice, for both short periods (days) and less frequently for longer periods of time (weeks / months).

Experience:

  • Commercially aware and deadline / target orientated.
  • Ability to solve problems logically and positively, and to take an active part in decision-making on the project.
  • It would be advantageous to have had experience of working abroad, and/or worked in teams made up of international members.

THE ROLE

An exciting opportunity for a Process Engineer to join us as part of our Downstream business unit.

You will play a key role in the development of new products and solutions for aluminium production routes, including metallurgical development, and providing support to pre-projects and contracts to ensure a high standard solution is delivered to meet customers’ requirements.
Working as a part of the Process and Commissioning team, based in Sheffield, you will have regular contact with colleagues from all functional areas across the wider business, ensuring deliverables are met in all Aluminium projects.

You will have enthusiasm, be customer focused, results oriented and have a positive and solution-oriented attitude.

This role includes the opportunity to travel internationally, providing commissioning support on-site when required.

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Working apply own knowledge and expertise to support the develop of new products and processes that will contribute to the growth and expansion our aluminium process portfolio.
  • Play an active role technical bid preparation, providing calculations for process and metallurgical elements, liaising with internal stakeholders to help determine equipment and layout configurations that help determine equipment and layout configurations.
  • Compile and present pre-project solutions and support to key stakeholders including direct to clients, either remotely or by on-site visits to assist with defined deliverables.
  • Assist in the development of process standards, contribute to and present technical papers at conference and ensure compliance standards are adhered to and met.
  • Work within correct health and safety of site personnel standards as applicable.
  • Contribute to the organisation of the production/commissioning schedule, maintenance work, customer acceptance tests and final project handover if required.

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Working knowledge of process engineering for aluminium including manufacturing and materials testing processes and standards, alloy development, and processing from liquid metal to final coiled products. Ideally in an Engineering related business.
  • An understanding of the project lifecycle from sales through to installation and commissioning.
  • Excellent communication skills for both internal and client facing contact.
  • Ability to solve problems quickly and positively. Take an active part in the decision making of the team.
  • Strong organisational skills and an ability to work autonomously, plan own work and prioritise.
  • Good knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation
