About the role

The role will be to provide engineering support for the introduction and manufacturing of self-contained breathing apparatus and associated products at the Draeger facility, by determining and implementing the most appropriate methods and equipment for production needs and supporting this as required. The role will involve project work and periodic support for other business areas depending on Company needs.

  • Undertake own training and development activities in accordance with required timescales.
  • Take responsibility for housekeeping and 6S within own work area.
  • Attend meetings where required to provide production engineering input.
  • Ensure all work is undertaken to the required HSE (Health, Safety and Environmental) standards.
  • Obtain, analyse, and report production data to support fact-based business decisions.
  • Maximise process efficiency, safety, capability and robustness through equipment and method improvements.
  • Support / lead root cause analysis workshops as necessary to support Production stoppages and recurring issues.
  • Support New product introduction into Operations as a lead via the Production Engineering role – liaise with other department representatives and ensure checklists, reports and all associated documentation is updated.
  • Devise and document working methods to ensure the Production Process is robust.
  • Implement & take ownership of appropriate process controls (Including assembly process control charts, control plans, standard operating procedures, process instructions, risk assessments, PUWER, COSHH, etc)
  • Working with supplier’s design, order and control jigs, fixtures, production tooling and associated documentation within own area of responsibility
  • Generate and introduce process improvements to support the business growth and productivity improvement KPI (key performance indicator)
  • Work with maintenance and production team members to ensure effective PM/TPM implementation and support.
  • Manage project implementation through lifecycle using the Draeger Project Management standard (machine moves, installations, modifications, new machinery, and new processes)
  • Ensure all changes which may affect product are controlled and managed through appropriate stakeholder involvement and quality / statistical analysis.
  • Liaise and manage outside contractors and suppliers where necessary.
  • Training and guidance of apprentices, operators, or others where appropriate
  • Some travel off-site to conduct inspection of new equipment, attend training courses and provide customer field support.
  • Any other reasonable duties required by Operations Management.

Size of team/environment

  • The Production Engineering team consists of approximately 15 members.
  • Working between office, lab and factory floor the team provide Engineering support to the production team, Project teams and other stakeholders as required.
  • This can be in the form of build or introduction of new equipment and processes and support of existing. The team also provide advice, knowledge, expertise and Engineering services to other departments as required.

Education/Qualifications

  • HNC Mechanical /Production Engineering or equivalent minimum.
  • Degree qualified in a relevant Engineering discipline would be an advantage but not essential

Related Experience

  • Potentially apprentice trained from a similar background with subsequent experience in an Engineering role (fast paced manufacturing of safety critical products. Pressure systems experience is ideal).
  • Experience working in collaboration with and in support of internal customers and cross functional matrix managed project teams.
  • Skills, Special Competencies
  • General IT knowledge and ability, use of Microsoft office, Microsoft Project, databases, AutoCAD lt or similar.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. A great team player.
  • Self motivated, decisive, customer and service orientated.
  • Proactive and flexible with a good ability to prioritise work without close supervision.
  • Knowledge of Lean manufacturing and 6 Sigma / Minitab tools and techniques an advantage.
  • PLC programming / faultfinding (Siemens / Omron) and Fanuc Robot programming / faultfinding would be advantageous.

Job Description

We’re hiring for a Production Engineer to join a thriving sub-contract engineering business in Stockport.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to take full ownership of the CNC production engineering department, contributing to continuous improvement initiatives and driving the production of high-quality components.

What will you be doing as a Production Engineer?

  • Managing all programming and tooling operations for the CNC turning department
  • Creating and proving out programs for CNC lathes and vertical milling machines
  • Optimising production processes, reducing waste, and improving efficiency
  • Attending APQP meetings as the production engineering representative
  • Assessing tooling requirements and ensuring readiness for production deadlines
  • Generating setup instructions and shop floor documentation to aid manufacturing
  • Training and developing production staff as required
  • Implementing continuous improvement methodologies, such as Kaizen and 5S

What do you need?

  • HND/HNC in Manufacturing or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Apprenticeship-trained or extensive experience as a CNC Programmer
  • At least 5-10 years of CNC offline and online programming experience
  • Proficiency with Fanuc, Mazatrol, and CAM software (Featurecam preferred)
  • Experience with Mazak Integrex multi-axis turning centres is advantageous
  • Strong knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Background in machining various materials and tight tolerance work
  • Familiarity with continuous improvement techniques and tooling optimisation
