Job Description

McCann Bristol is the BigSmall agency, with the might of a global advertising network but a small(ish), integrated team of 70 talented people. We are also part of McCann Worldgroup, a global agency network that delivers culture-shaping work for some of the world’s biggest brands.

We are also part of McCann Worldgroup, a global agency network that delivers culture-shaping work for some of the world’s biggest brands. And to add to the (literal) wheelbarrow full of awards we’ve got including Euro Effies most effective global agency, Cannes Network of the Year, Campaign’s European Integrated Agency of the Year, not to mention McCann Central’s haul of awards in recent years at Cannes Lions, Clios, One Show, D&AD, LIAs, Golden Drum & Creative Circle Awards. So, creativity really is at the forefront of everything we do.

We’re a team of passionate creatives, strategists and marketers from a wide mix of backgrounds. But there’s a lot that unites us – like caring deeply about everything we make. And though our skillsets are wide and our process knowledge is deep, we are all still learning every day.

The Role:

As a Project Director you will deliver marketing and advertising projects across the agency’s client accounts. You will be responsible for the projects from inception to completion, working closely with all agency disciplines and agency partners to deliver the work on time and on budget. You will be client facing when appropriate, with ownership and responsibility for everything from the initial scopes of work, managing projects through our Strategy, Creative, Design and Production teams, through to the delivery of the final assets, becoming the trusted face of delivery through that process.

The day-to-day stuff:

  • Lead the execution of large/complex marketing projects and campaigns, supporting the Business Leadership team and partnering with the Creative and Production teams.
  • Take a holistic view of projects within the team, lead forward planning, holding regular status meetings with internal project teams to keep communication open and update relevant workflow documentation.
  • Set up and run kick-off meetings at the beginning of every large/complex project, ensuring all staff are clear on the plan and actions required.
  • Work closely with the Business Leadership Account Directors to manage client scopes of work, sometimes across multiple channels involving managing multiple agency partners.
  • Track and report incremental scope opportunities.
  • Sign off project scopes created within the team, assessing the quality and accuracy of scopes and feeding back accordingly.
  • Sign off, produce and manage accurate timing plans, which will be agreed with all parties.
  • Work closely with the Creative Director, Design Director and Creative Services team to define and book resource, having a viewpoint of the skill sets required for the project and what is required from the team.
  • Schedule and attend creative review meetings for large/complex projects, facilitating attendance of key stakeholders and ensuring the meetings start and finish on time with clear actions identified at the close.
  • This is a client facing role, so attending project/production meetings and delivering client presentations will be required.
  • Identify and develop improvement opportunities for the internal creative workflow process and be an advocate for that workflow process.
  • Ensure the right people are involved at the key stages of each project.
  • Work with all Project Managers within the team to ensure you are aware of all live projects going through and work with the team to plan and prioritise accordingly.
  • Work directly with the Operations Director to identify any skills gaps that exist within the agency.
  • Establish and embed client specific processes to ensure efficiencies and highest quality of delivery.
  • Work with the Business Leadership team to manage client/account budgets through proper scope definition, risk management and change management protocols.
  • Be responsible for financial reconciliation on completion of projects.
  • Monitor, assess and report to the Operations Director and Business Leadership Director on the profitability and efficiency of project delivery.
  • Take the lead on project management tools within the agency.

People Management:

  • Ensure effective agreements are reached quickly and with minimum disruption to the workflow when disruptions and conflict arises.
  • Communicate project changes quickly and clearly, ensuring everything is understood by all project participants.
  • Apply strong written and verbal communication skills.

Core competencies:

  • Strong numerical reasoning.
  • Proactive nature.
  • Excellent organisation skills.
  • The ability to multi-task and prioritise.
  • The ability to lead projects and project teams.
  • Detail orientated.
  • Ability to problem solve and forward plan to avoid issues.
  • Ability to form strong internal, cross-departmental working relationships at all levels.
  • Ability to form successful professional relationships with clients and third parties.
  • The skill and experience to run successful meetings at all levels.
  • Strong negotiating skills at all levels.
  • The confidence and experience to interrogate client requirements and suggest alternative solutions where appropriate.
  • The ability to develop team skills and provide mentorship.
  • The ability to manage and resolve competing viewpoints.
  • A willingness to offer time and energy to those who need it.
