Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated SEN Academic Mentor to join a dynamic team at a thriving secondary school in Dagenham. The school is committed to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all students, and we need an enthusiastic individual who can provide one-to-one and small-group support to students with a range of SEN.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide tailored mentoring and academic support to students with special educational needs, including those with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and emotional or behavioural difficulties.
  • Develop and implement individual learning and behaviour plans in collaboration with teachers and the SENCO.
  • Work closely with teaching staff to ensure that all students have access to the curriculum and make progress in line with their abilities.
  • Promote the emotional well-being and social development of students, helping them build resilience, self-confidence, and independent learning skills.
  • Support students during lessons, helping to adapt materials and tasks to meet their specific needs.
  • Deliver small-group interventions focused on literacy, numeracy, and social skills.
  • Monitor and record student progress, reporting regularly to the SENCO and other relevant staff members.
  • Build strong relationships with students, parents/carers, and external agencies to provide holistic support.

Key Requirements:

  • Experience working with children or young people with special educational needs, preferably in a secondary school setting.
  • A compassionate and understanding approach, with the ability to build trust and motivate students.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Patience, resilience, and a positive attitude in the face of challenging situations.
  • Knowledge of different SEN conditions and strategies for supporting learning and development.
  • A relevant qualification in education, SEN, or a related field is desirable, but not essential.
