This role is subject to –
  • Qualification – higher-level qualification such as BSc MSc in an electrical engineering discipline.
  • Casual Car Documentation– The successful candidate will be a designated Casual Car User which means that car journeys may be necessary on an occasional basis, but are not essential to the role. If you do drive, you must always hold a full valid driving licence and provide your own car for use at work, as well as provide all the appropriate documentation. You will receive an allowance per mile of business use.
The Capital Programmes Division is looking to recruit an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer with proven construction experience to join a dynamic service that delivers a complex programme of projects on behalf of Manchester City Council.

The role is based in the Minor Works Team which forms part of Capital Programmes Division that is responsible for developing and delivering approximately £200m pa of major and minor capital programmes construction schemes across the city.

The Minor Works Team is responsible for delivering construction, repair and refurbishment projects valued between £2k to £2m. The Team assists clients to review project requirements and develop programmes of work which achieve economies of scale from a cost, quality, and programme delivery perspective. It also provides a range of specialists from building surveying, mechanical and electrical design services, structural design, cost management, contract management, and Construction Design (CDM) compliance. The Team also offers Fire Risk Assessment and a Principal Designer service.

About the Candidate

We require suitably qualified Senior Electrical Engineer to work across a diverse portfolio of projects. Candidates will have a relevant accredited BSc or MSc degree in electrical engineering and be registered with a professional body such as CEng/IEng. Experience in electrical engineering design and construction project management is required. Experience in inspecting and reporting defects, design of new installations, specifications, calculations, and feasibility studies on all types of buildings are also key to this role.

Candidates will therefore have substantial demonstrable experience of working as an electrical engineer on construction projects building component design within a changing and operational environment and possess a good working knowledge of building and planning legislation, current Health Safety and Welfare regulations, CDM Regulations, energy saving and carbon reduction measures. Experience of working with various construction contracts such as: PSPC, JCT and NEC3/4 (ECC and/or TSC) is also required.

Professionally they will be able to design, deliver and manage contracts from commencement to completion within approved budgets, to quality and timescales, as well as well as being competent in working with CAD, BIM, and related packages such as HEVACOMP.

The Role

We are looking for a Senior Electrical Engineer specialising in system engineering. The Senior Electrical Engineer will deliver industry leading solutions for high specifications Data Centre systems worldwide. The Senior Electrical Engineer will be a lead electrical engineer providing efficient Data Centre designs at all stages of the design. This is a full-time hybrid role located in our London office (3 days working from our UK Office (London Bridge), 2 days from home or 50% of the time in the office).


Role Responsibilities

  • Develop concept and detailed design of electrical services and associated controls.

  • Attend and/or lead client, design team, professional, contractor and site meetings.

  • Produce Schematics, specifications, calculations, equipment schedules and reports to meet the required industry and legal standards

  • Coordinate your designs with other disciplines.

  • Maintain a commercial awareness of projects, track hours versus agreed fees.

  • Agree any variations or changes to the design prior to allocating additional hours.

  • Monitor and review the quality of the work produced by graduate electrical engineers or electrical engineers.

  • Monitor and review the quality of the contractor’s electrical installations, ensuring they meet the client’s requirements and local standards / regulations.

  • Carry out validation reviews of contractor’s designs and specifications.

  • Carry out QA/QC inspections on site and produce associated reports.

  • Attend witness testing activities on site and produce associates reports.

  • The role will be primarily office based but will involve some site attendances (UK and International).

  • Be capable of taking the lead on projects with minimal input from management team.

  • A Bachelor’s degree (BEng or equivalent) or a Master’s degree in a relevant field is preferred. Vocational courses will also be considered if supported by relevant experience.

  • 4-8 years’ experience as an electrical engineer in building services.

  • Previous mission critical design experience in the data centre, clean tech or telecoms sectors working for consulting engineers is highly advantageous.

  • Proven ability to oversee projects from concept through to construction, including the commissioning phase.

  • Working towards or already holding a Chartered Engineer status or equivalent professional registration.

  • Willingness to mentor and support the growth of other team members.

  • Ability to prioritise personal and team workloads, work to tight deadlines, and stay within budget constraints.

  • Strong problem-solving capabilities.

  • Essential experience in power systems design, including HV/MV and LV systems.

  • Knowledge of generators, UPS systems, AC and DC power systems, and switchgear systems.

  • Familiarity with data centre power systems and general building services is essential.


Specific Requirements

  • Proactive communicator with excellent verbal and written English skills.

  • Strong relationship-building abilities at all organisational levels.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, BIM360, Autocad, Dialux, Revit, Amtech, SKM, ETAP or Easypower.

  • Experience working with and coordinating teams of 3–10 engineers, both locally and internationally.

  • Ability to identify and define scopes of work, design activities, and required timelines, as well as reviewing the value of design work.

  • Assist the Team Manager in preparation stage, reviewing documents and costs, and identifying project risks.

  • Capable of explaining and managing expectations and quality levels, and verifying quality levels after stage/project completion.

  • Skilled in producing technical specifications, reports, and a system design from scratch and/or should be capable of producing a detailed design based on technical starting points/specifications.

Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud. Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction projects. We are looking for a passionate, high-energy individual to help build the cloud datacenters that power the world’s largest online services.
This Senior Electrical Engineer position will fulfill an on-site role at Microsoft’s London datacenters supporting ongoing construction activities. This role will serve as a daily on-site presence to review progress and support quality design of multiple concurrent datacenter builds.
The position will be responsible for monitoring progress for compliance with construction documents from initial stages through commissioning and work closely with the engineering, procurement, controls and construction teams. Additionally, this role will provide project management, technical direction, decision-making and overall leadership on behalf of engineering throughout the construction lifecycle up to and including the turnover to Microsoft Datacenter Operations.
As such they will support multi-discipline coordination, issue identification and resolution, continuous improvement efforts, and the ongoing documentation of project learnings for incorporation into future designs.

  • Perform regular site walks to observe progress, review construction vs design intent, and flag potential concerns for engineering review.

  • Support submittal review, RFI responses, and commissioning activities.
  • Facilitate timely response and enable seamless project execution.
