Description

The Senior Estimator’s role is to lead estimates for civil engineering works in accordance with Company estimating systems and procedures, working with other members of tender teams to develop customer solutions and secure sufficient work by value and type to meet the company’s objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead estimates

  • Undertake estimates in accordance with Company procedures.
  • Lead team of estimators for larger tenders, mentoring and developing junior estimators
  • Identify opportunities and risks during the tender process.
  • Liaise with the business unit, Bid Manager and Planner to agree with methodology and principles.
  • Maintain a register of key assumptions within the estimate
  • Maintain tender estimate file.
  • Provide indicative pricing support for business development.
  • Obtain feedback from site teams on estimating adequacy and current costs.

Present estimates at adjudication

  • Prepare to estimate "adjudication pack.”
  • Present basis of estimate and key assumptions
  • Maintain notes of adjudication meetings
  • Closeout actions and monitor customer negotiations, seeking amended authority as required.

Handover to site teams at contract award

  • Prepare estimating handover packs.
  • Maintain notes of handover meeting
  • Provide ongoing support to site teams relating to estimate and key assumptions.

Key Measures & Targets:

  • Winning work to meet the Company’s objectives.
  • Developing a coherent and consistent tender submission with the use of key estimating assumptions
  • Developing a tender win strategy alongside the business unit teams
  • Providing temporary works support for tenders and the design element of design and construct tenders

Person Specification:

The successful candidate is likely to meet all the following criteria:

Essential

  • Engineering or commercial background
  • HNC or equivalent in a related Engineering qualification
  • Experience in water and civil
  • Proven track record working on tenders ranging up to 50m.
  • Numerate and IT literate, familiar with estimating software and Microsoft Office, especially Microsoft Excel
  • Chartered, incorporated status or similar
  • Confidence in dealing with customers and personnel at a senior level.
  • Ability to ensure all tender submissions are both feasible and profitable.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of wastewater, rail, or the tunnelling sector

Key Tasks

  • Follow up – establishing competition and their levels of submission for record purposes.

About The Role

This is a fantastic opening to work within a thriving market with growth forecast for years. Morrison Energy Services work for blue chip clients building energy infrastructure, supporting the country’s net zero target.

Specifically, in Electricity Transmission, this means building, refurbishing and upgrading high voltage overhead power lines and substations. To meet the demand in this sector, we are growing our teams in all areas.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Estimator to join our growing preconstruction team. Previous experience in the electricity transmission industry is not required. You will be based in a supportive team environment with other estimators, as well as Bid Managers, Project Development Managers and Pre Contract Construction Managers. In this role you will be working on tenders for HV substation works (M+E and civils), responsible for successfully pricing and securing new contracts for the business to deliver.

We are looking for someone who is driven, can work on their own initiative and has experience within a construction contractor or subcontractor environment. In return you will be entering a business that recognises high performance and has excellent progression prospects.


As Senior Estimator your duties & responsibilities will be:

  • Mentoring other estimators within the department
  • Understanding the contents of the tender documentation (tender timescales, expected submission documents/responses, contract information, project scope, site & works information)
  • Project risk identification
  • Assisting the bids manager in the preparation of the kick off meeting and bids programme
  • Working with procurement and commercial departments to prepare supply chain request for quotation information packs
  • Ensuring the project solution is understood as it is built up during the tender phase, and challenging it where necessary
  • Prepare for and chair meetings to identify project risks and discuss required project management levels with internal stakeholders
  • Analysis of supply chain quotations, benchmarking of project costs and testing of proposed productivity rates
  • Preparation of the tender price in Microsoft Excel using supply chain quotations and applying internal plant and people rates to programmes of work / activity schedules
  • Prepare for and chair tender price review meetings with senior management and other internal stakeholders
  • Prepare the client pricing documents for submission (including required risk / contractual information)
  • Where required, assist in the preparation and delivery of post-submission presentations to the client and/or attend negotiation meetings
  • Save, document and organise important tender pricing communications/information as per the tender folder structure
  • Establish and maintain professional/effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Prepare and chair pricing handover meetings on successful bids
  • Identify, communicate and implement ideas for continual improvement within the tender process
  • Work within company policies and procedures
  • Carry out any other duties as and when necessary to meet the varying demands of the business and client requirements

Skills & Knowledge Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years previous experience in an infrastructure estimating role (essential) or substation estimating role (desirable)
  • Mathematical competence
  • Good Microsoft Excel skills
  • Competent in other standard Microsoft software
  • Confident in written and verbal communication with internal/external stakeholders including with senior roles
  • Basic understanding of engineering/construction technology and terminology
  • Ability to read and understand engineering specifications and drawings
  • Basic understanding of contractual terminology
  • Hold a valid full UK driving license
  • Mathematics and English GCSE or equivalent
  • Ability to work under pressure and to strict deadlines
  • Flexibility in terms of working hours
