MTL Advanced is a Yorkshire-based steel engineering and manufacturing company operating from a 300,000 sq. ft. facility in Rotherham.

Our inhouse capabilities include, large format Laser Cutting and Press Braking, CNC Precision Machining, Fabrication & Welding, Shot Blasting, Painting and final Assembly.

As we continue to expand and grow and following multi-million-pound investment we are looking for an experienced Shift Manager to oversee our manufacturing operations to assist in building upon our strong reputation with a focused commitment to continuous improvement.

You will inspire positive change and drive efficiency within a modern, purpose-built manufacturing site (67,000sqft), kitted out with state-of-the-art Welding bays, Press and CNC machining centres. You will be at the forefront of leading a dedicated, highly skilled and diverse team. Your role isn’t just to lead – it’s to improve, challenge, transform, empower, mentor, and win! Everyday!

The Shift Manager is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the manufacturing processes and managing the production team. This role ensures that production runs efficiently on time, and within budget, while maintaining high-quality standards and ensuring the safety of our valued workforce.

This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual with a background in production leadership to take on a key role within a dynamic and growing team

ABOUT THE ROLE:

  • Collaboratively manage your team’s performance (Operatives, Team Leaders and Supervisors)
  • Lead, develop, coach and mentor your team. Identify, facilitate, and monitor training needs
  • Encourage the team to meet their full potential through positive engagement
  • Conduct counselling’s and disciplinary proceedings
  • Provide maximum efficiency in the production process
  • Create plans to effectively produce customer orders ‘On time and In Full’
  • Monitor documentation; correctly record process times and maintain high standards of workmanship
  • Ensure maintenance faults and problems are reported, and fixes are expedited to completion
  • Ensure team is working safely and responsibly through monitoring and auditing against health and safety legislation and company policy
  • Report and investigate accidents and incidents inclusive of corrective actions
  • Effectively implement any processes of change which occur within the team and department
  • Ensure excellent communication pathways both up and down stream within your department, and across other departments
  • Drive improvements in efficiencies throughout your department

ABOUT YOU:

· Proven experience as a Shift Manager or similar role, within a manufacturing / Engineering environment.

· Demonstrated experience managing teams of Production colleagues, with the ability to inspire, coach, and develop people.

· Strong knowledge of Health & Safety regulations and the ability to enforce these effectively.

· Competence in production planning and computer literate.

· Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes, equipment, and quality control procedures.

· A flexible approach to be able to adapt to changing and challenging requirements

· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to communicate at all levels

· Ability to remain focused on Quality and consistently reiterate its importance to others

· Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to generate innovative concepts and ideas

Based at our site in Cross Hands, this key management role will be accountable for leading a team to ensure operational effectiveness is maximized, KPI’s are met and high technical and quality standards are achieved through the development of people, processes, and systems. You will lead and develop a team to manufacture in a way that achieves and exceeds quality specifications, cost standards and full delivery of the order plan whilst ensuring compliance with company standards.
The successful candidate will have full departmental responsibility for:

Responsibilities:

  • Delivering the production plan efficiently across the area you are responsible for, maximising yield and minimising downtime and waste.
  • Inspire the team to achieve volume, positive yield variance and general cost ambitions whilst ensuring quality standards are exceeded.
  • Support the Management in the identification, development and implementation of relevant departmental projects and initiatives.
  • Maintaining an efficient productive department whilst adhering to all Environmental, Health & Safety and Quality Standards laid out in departmental and site policies and procedures.
  • Clarify the roles, responsibilities and accountabilities for your supervisors, line leaders and operatives so they fully understand performance and application expectations in their role.

Qualifications:

  • Have prior experience at management level within a fast paced food manufacturing facility
  • Demonstrate an understanding of operating with integrity, of quality processes and systems and has high standards of compliance and quality with a Food Safety Level 3 qualification.
  • Demonstrates financial understanding and business acumen.
  • Maintain a Strong focus on needs of the customer and consumer together with a strong understanding of the processes and procedures needed to be implemented to achieve these needs.
  • Maintaining production and quality standards laid down by the business, whilst ensuring that they are fully trained on Lean Manufacturing Practice and Continuous Improvement Processes
  • Knowledgeable and trained in people management practices including investigations, Disciplinary and Grievance procedures, Performance Management and Recruitment & Selection processes.
  • Oversees compliance whilst demonstrating an understanding and awareness of HSE requirements. IOSHH trained.

Responsibilities:


Health and Safety and Environment
  • Ensure the Shift Team complies with required statutory and mandatory H&S and Environmental requirements.
  • Promote a ‘safety first culture within the Shift Team and proactively manage H&S issues. Ensure all machinery and equipment is safe to operate and all team members are trained and competent to fulfil their job role.
  • Ensure H&S refresher training is conducted at appropriate intervals and personnel records are maintained.

Food Safety and Quality
  • Ensure the Shift Team is trained and proficient in food safety, SOPs and QAS specifications and complies with all rules and procedures concerning the production of safe food produced to specification.
  • Ensure SOPs are up to date, relevant and refresher training is conducted at appropriate intervals and personnel records are maintained.

Performance
  • Operate the factory in accordance with the Production Plan to agreed KPIs.
  • Manage the shift through Short Interval Control to measure hourly performance of lines.
  • Take corrective actions to correct any performance variances to target and preventative action to remedy root cause and ensure no reoccurrences.
  • Ensure all performance data is reported.

Plant Standards
  • Ensure good GMP is always maintained and the Shift Team operates ‘clean as you go’.
  • Develop and maintain 5S systems and standards for efficient operation.

Continuous Improvement
  • Support the Plant Manager in constructing and executing plans for improving the Shift Team and plant performance.

People and Team Development
  • Develop training plans for all Shift Team members.
  • Ensure there are the requisite skills to perform job roles to the required standard and there are adequately trained deputies for holiday and absence cover.
  • Address personnel performance issues through effective use of the performance management process.
  • Manage holidays and absence so that there are sufficient skills within the shift team to deliver the production plan, within site guidelines.

It’s within this successful team at Marley, that we’re recruiting for a Shift Manager to support the Production Manager with the management and running of the site.

This is a full-time position working 12 hours Days/Nights rotating with only 1 Saturday morning every 3 weeks AND 4 consecutive days off every 2 out of 3 weeks

So what’s the mission?
Your mission is to lead an operations team and operational activities defined to your area, some of which include overall safe operation of plant and equipment, safety, quality, waste and OEE targets and people management. You’ll ensure that process control checks and records are completed to company standards and escalation and management of quality incidents through a non-conformance process, guaranteeing all affected products or material is contained/controlled.

We pride ourselves on Health, Safety and Quality so you will maintain a safe working environment for all by behaving in a way consistent with safe working and proactively challenging colleagues if they are putting themselves or others at risk. You’ll support a zero-tolerance approach to breaches in safety standards, ensuring that everything (Pre-start checks, PPE, Lock-off, behaviours, contractor activity) within the assigned department/shift is compliant with policies/procedures and associated site controls.

You’ll be a team player and people person as you’ll be delivering team briefs/toolbox talks in a timely manner and spirit in which they are intended whilst ensuring that any initiatives are embraced and actioned in line with company guidelines. You must have previous people management experience to ensure you’re able to lead your team to success throughout the employees’ lifecycle!

What are the mission-critical skills?

  • Previous experience operating in a medium/large manufacturing site with responsibility for a team of 10 or more employees
  • Excellent people management skills – employee relations, absence management etc.
  • Experience of maximising the potential of others including development and performance management
  • Excellent IT skills (Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word etc)
  • Knowledge & understanding of Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE)
  • Experience in implementing continuous improvement/lean manufacturing techniques eg DMAIC, would be an advantage
  • IOSH Managing Safely / NEBOSH General Certificate and other relevant qualifications eg ILM, Lean Six Sigma desirable
