About Us
For over 20 years, Merseyside Domestic Violence Service (MDVS) has been a dedicated advocate for the rights and well-being of women, children, and families impacted by domestic abuse and stalking, particularly those facing multiple disadvantages. Our mission is to provide life-changing support, empower survivors, and create lasting systemic change. As we expand our impact, we seek a proactive and experienced Treasurer who can actively contribute to our financial leadership and hands-on support for the charity.
Purpose of the Role
The Treasurer will play a pivotal role in ensuring the financial health, transparency, and sustainability of MDVS. This is a hands-on role that goes beyond strategic oversight, requiring active engagement in financial processes, subcommittee participation, and close collaboration with our staff and trustees.

Financial Management and Oversight
- Actively oversee the charity’s financial operations, including monitoring budgets, approving financial reports, and reviewing expenditures.
- Collaborate with staff to ensure accurate allocation and monitoring of restricted and unrestricted funding streams.
- Implement and maintain systems, such as QuickBooks, for efficient tracking and reporting of multiple funding streams, ensuring clarity and compliance with funder requirements.
Subcommittee Engagement
- Chair or actively participate in the Finance and Fundraising Subcommittee to review financial performance, risks, and fundraising opportunities in detail.
- Provide hands-on support to staff in managing complex financial tasks, such as payroll allocation across multiple funders.
- Ensure clear communication between the subcommittee and the board, presenting actionable recommendations.
Compliance and Governance
- Ensure adherence to financial regulations, legal requirements, and ethical practices, safeguarding the charity’s reputation.
- Oversee the preparation of year-end accounts, audits, and financial compliance reports, working closely with auditors and staff.
Advocacy and Stakeholder Engagement
- Act as a financial ambassador for MDVS, building confidence among funders, donors, and partners by demonstrating robust financial management.
- Collaborate with the Chair and CEO to secure funding and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders.
Skills and Qualifications
- Commitment to the Cause: A strong passion for social justice and supporting survivors of domestic abuse and stalking.
- Financial Expertise: Proven experience in financial management, preferably with QuickBooks or similar accounting software.
- Strategic Thinker: Ability to contribute to long-term financial planning while ensuring immediate needs are met.
- Hands-On Approach: Willingness to work closely with staff, supporting day-to-day financial processes and oversight.
- Governance Knowledge: Familiarity with charity governance, compliance, and funder requirements.
- Communication Skills: Ability to articulate complex financial concepts clearly to diverse audiences.
Commitment
- Attend four board meetings per year, actively contributing to discussions and decisions.
- Commit to ongoing support outside board meetings, approximately up to 4 hours per month, including subcommittee participation, financial oversight, and collaboration with staff on financial tasks.
- Engage in specific projects or periods of increased need, such as during audits, strategic planning, or major funding applications.
